My Two Cents

I’m confused & sad today!!!! Ron Wilson San Jose Sharks Head Coach – R.I.P. !!! As most of you know by now I’ve been a Ron Wilson supporter for years going all the way back to the Wilson Anaheim MIGHTY Ducks era, when his Ducks gave the eventual champion Detroit Red Wings all they could handle. Granted, the Ducks were swept, but every game went into at least one OT period very much like the Sharks versus Stars series this post-season. Also on the man’s resume is the 1996 World Cup USA Championship – second to only the 1980 Olympic team for miraculous wins! Also let us not forget taking a Washington Capitols team out of nowhere to the Stanley Cup finals. How is it you can lead the NHL in victories over the past four years, be at or near the top in post-season games played, and then get the ax? It is not Ron Wilson’s fault that no player on his team not named Cheechoo or Clowe will play in front of the net, or that his No.1 player – Superstar is too busy looking for the pretty picture perfect pass when he has a clear shooting lane to fire the puck hard into, or an over all team that plays offense with too much finesse (even though that style of play is beautiful to watch WHEN PLAYED RIGHT). That has not worked since the old Soviet Red Army teams and the last time I checked, the Soviet Union collapsed and there is no K.L.M. line on our Sharks team with 2/3’s of that line (Larionov & Makarov)come and gone for us some 15 years ago!!!! As the Sharks players stated as they cleaned out their lockers last week for the long Summer, it was not Ron Wilson’s fault. He was not the one out there skating on the ice, UNDERACHEIVING once again! So now what? What does Doug Wilson have planned? Just who might be on the parade route through his office for interviews for the now vacant head coaching position here in San Jose? I’ve heard a lot call for Pat Burns. Not a bad idea if he is healthy enough from battling Cancer. Bob Hartley been suggested as is Joel Quenneville. I find it funny that the longest tenured coach in the league is Barry (No Neck) Trotz in Nashville and his Predetors get bounced from the 1st round of the playoffs consistently year after year (Twice by the Sharks) yet his job is still intact!!! In my humble opinion, for which this entire blog entry is – JUST MY HUMBLE SHARKS DIE HARD OPINION IS….Tony Granato as Head Coach, and bring Mike Ricci & Brian Marchment down from the front office as his assistants! There I said it!!!! Feedback???

i love
the idea of having Ricci assist. hmm, how about we promote Tim Hunter and then promote Ricci to assistant coach and just keep Rob Zettler where he is?

Well
I’m sad and sorta glad. I really didn’t like the way he singled out Patty last season because it wasn’t just his fault. But I agree with you, Granato as head coach (because he seems like the kind of guy you’d want to play for) but keep Zetts and Hunter.

i kinda agree
i was really confused bc i dont see the coach as the main problem for a team losing but many people made some good points see my recent blog all i can say is that we havent been able to win the big war with him only small battles and maybe some fresh coaching, and some new players, will do us good.

GOOD RIDDINS
Sorry yodaman but Ron was a like a virus every year with his non emotional tact. Calling out Marleau last year when everyone knows it was Hannan that messed things up. (way to screen your own goalie ya @%!). Anyway we need new blood and I will take whoever they throw at us. Heck even get Drew to assist in coaching anyone is better than lifeless Ron. All he wanted was to improve his golf game and we all know it too!

Expectations Too High in The West
As a long-time Red Wings fan, I find it amusing that everybody at the top of the Sharks organization feel it is their God-Given right to hold the Stanley Cup. After San Jose was eliminated by Detroit last year, you would have thought the Sharks had lost to the worst team in the NHL to hear the comments coming from the Sharks organization. The lost to a team that has made the playoffs 17 years in a row and routinely competes for the best overall record in hockey. While everybody puts the best product on the ice with hopes of bringing home the Cup, the Sharks expect to bring it home and anything else is considered failure. If the Sharks were in the East, it might not be overly optimistic to expect to be able to at least get to the Stanley Cup finals because there is less depth in the East. Anaheim, San Jose, Detroit, & Dallas would all be considered one of the top 5 teams in the East. The GM in San Jose has done a great job of putting a lot of talent on the ice. Wilson had put his stamp on that team and had them ready to play most nights. With the additions the team made this year, they would have been in a better position to compete for the #1 seed next year so their path to the finals would be a little easier. With Wilson gone though, there will probably be a step back before they move forward because the team will have to adapt to a new coach and, probably a new style of play. That just means if the Stanley Cup gets awarded to the Western Conference representative (which currently looks like Detroit), that team will have an easier time defending their title next year.
