Buffalo
You rocked in Armageddon, and you nailed it on your blogs! Buffalo is a great Hockey town, and the Sabres are a great team to root for.

Hey!
I love your work and I think it’s awesome that you’re a hockey fanatic! I used to live in West Seneca when the Sabres had the French Connection, Danny Gare, Donnie Edwards, King Kong Korab…...I loved that team! My dad got transferred to PA & I grew to love the Flyers from then on. But I still have many connections to the area…...my best friend lives in Hamburg! Good luck to the Sabres next year, and I have to say that we LOVE Danny Briere & Marty Biron! I hated to see the Sabres lose such key guys, but they have been invaluable for us so far thru the season & first 4 playoff games!
Have a good one & I hope to see more of your blogs!

What's Your View?
So after your Toyota Pro/Celeb race (good luck btw) and before you start filming again, would you please grace us with a speculation blog? Who is your pick? Montreal? Detroit? I am a Bruins fan, but that’s pretty much screwed now. Have you been watching? (or is that a dumb question?) Maybe next year for the Sabres. The Bruins still have a (slim) chance. I still have faith. (at least a little)

Blog during the playoffs this year?
I know it’s heartbreaking to have the Sabres on the sidelines this year BUT, are you following the playoffs at all this year? Our house is rooting for Caps and Sharks (duh) and we’re hoping to be able to watch the World Championships but no world on what will air.
Anyhow, love Prison Break and hope to see some comments during the playoffs.

End of the Line
A very interesting thing is going on – as much to do with friendship as anything. Kim Coates has become a bit of a Sabres fan and myself a bit of a Detroit fan, and it’s been kinda nice. I’ve really enjoying this postseason, and my wife has become a monstrous Wings fan. They played so well. We were able, Kim and myself, to watch the Ducks eliminate the Wings on Tuesday, and while it was tough to watch, I give all credit to the Wings for battling as they did, right up to the end of the game.
But on to the Sabres, the reason we’re all here. Here are my thoughts on my final blog…
I have to say that I’ve never been more proud to be a Sabres fan. At the end of Game 5, when all of the Ottawa team was jumping around, going nuts, the chant starts: “Let’s Go Bu-Fa-Lo!” It was a good way to say “thanks guys, thanks for the run.” And I know nobody needs to say it (and probably don’t want to hear it), but the truth about it is, Ottawa was the team. I could spend a whole hour talking about things that bugged me about the series, like “when did they decide that tripping was not a penalty,” for example. In the Buffalo series, were they going to try that out? I mean, Game 6, when Emery pulled him down, he took the feet out from under him, and he goes down, did they figure that was OK? But then, the truth about it is, if you’re an Ottawa player/fan, there were a few that didn’t go your way either. So like I said, I can’t complain.
Regardless of moments like that, this was a monumental series: two OT games, back-and-forth, both teams fast and dangerous the whole time…I mean, we had the best hockey of the playoffs to watch for 6 games! The truth about it is, last year the Sabres eliminated the Senators from the playoffs, in a season where they were supposed to go all the way. I mean, you do that, and you have a situation where the other team is going to put you in their sights. Not only did they want to get to the Cup Finals but they wanted to beat your team, personally, as well. You can’t argue with them. This year, in the East, they were the team. So everyone hold their head up high.
Just like we have all playoffs, even when things weren’t going our way.
Listen: 10,000 people outside of the arena? Come on – that’s support, that’s love, that’s the way it should be. To be a fan of this team is an incredible feeling right now. And I’m looking forward to seeing what happens this summer and next season already. But this series, this year? I wish it went another way. I wish the Sabres, good or bad, had an explosiveness that we saw many times during the course of the season. Because the bottom line is that when you’re a fan, and the season goes on, everyone looks forward to the playoffs. So it could’ve been worse. Imagine, the Hurricanes, their fans, they said goodbye a month ago. When there are only four teams left and you’re one of them, you get a lot more memories, a lot more excitement, a lot more reward, and you can’t take that for granted. Of course I wanted them to win more than 2 series, but let’s take something away from this: they won the battle of NY – the Rangers and the Isles. They showed some grit and some toughness, battling back and beating the hottest team going into the 2nd round, the Rangers. Miller emerged as an absolutely dominating force. And a lot of their young players are beginning to learn what it takes to win. In many ways it hurt worse last year, going into Game 7 with no D and the team that beat them went to the Cup and won. This year hurt as well, but you’re grateful for the memories and whatever happens, every year you know you’ll be there again rooting for them.
When you come from Buffalo, as many of us do, we don’t need it because we need another championship, we need it because we need one. We need one so much more because we’re living tough, we love our teams, and especially the Sabres. Since the Bills in the early 90s, in many ways they hold the city’s heart more than any sports team ever has. I’ll tell you something, Coates told me this (because I was on the plane during the OT), that even he felt pride at the Buffalo fans. They lose the game, the season is over, and all of a sudden about 20 seconds later, the chant goes up “Let’s Go Buffalo!” I was happy to hear that. You’re proud and you thank them. I don’t know what’s going to happen this summer, but whatever happens, we are proud to have this team.
And I’m going to do my own little plea here: I hope to God they keep the team intact. I don’t know about contracts, but I do know there is a lot of talk about two in particular. I was doing a radio show in Edmonton a couple weeks ago, and a fan had a request: someone called up, asked me to pick between Drury and Briere. I said I don’t ever want to pick, I can’t even think like that. I get the business, the realities, but I still hope they can keep that core group together and there’s another year next year. How old is Miller? 26? No matter what else happens, if we have that guy for a long time, we’re going to be OK for a long time. But what a great year. They finished on top of the league in the regular season, scored more goals than everyone else…just for whatever reason it was not as strong in the playoffs. But I can’t blame them. I don’t think any Sabres fan can. Because we know they wanted it as badly as we did, and we know they battled right up to the final moment when Alfredsson scored the series-clinching goal.
Here I have to say, I saw something during Game 4 that tells me all I need to know about Buffalo fans. I’m watching a Game where the Sabres are down 3 games to 0, and it’s in Ottawa, and there’s a girl way up in the stands, and her sign said “I still believe.”
That’s heart.
There are towns that have won many times, in different sports even, but we’ve never had that in Buffalo. Not even once. And we want that feeling for one moment. Folks from Buffalo, we want that one moment one time. Even if we never won again. I mean, we would root just as hard as always, no matter what, but that one moment, we’d never forget about it. We’d talk about it until our 2 year olds are grown and gone.
We’ve never had it and we want to it. So guess what?
We’re going to get it next year.
