Wrigley Field?? Say it ain’t so …

Thursday February 28, 2008 @ 05:39 PM EST

Yeah, another not hockey blog – but this has my blood boiling. To quote the Chicago Sun-Times, “Zell said Tuesday he won’t hesitate to sell the naming rights to Wrigley Field—even if baseball purists don’t like the idea.”

WHAT???! Rename Wrigley Field? I can’t be hearing this correctly … Wrigley? The home of the hard luck Cubbies? The home of the curse and the goat and the no-lights and 99 years since a series? That Wrigley?

It’s bad enough that Candlestick Park is now … Monster Park, I think. It’s hard to keep up. I mean, what’s next? The Anheuser-Busch White House or the AT&T Statue of Liberty?

What is it with this society? Is nothing sacrosanct? Is there really nothing we won’t sell?

If Wrigley Field does become Pampers Park or Fidelity Savings Field, it will be a sad day for America, tradition and sports.

If you’re a baseball fan, or even if you find baseball boring as hell but you’re afraid hockey is next – send an email to the Cubs. Or, better yet, the Sun-Times at zell@suntimes.com which they set up just for us to tell Zell … the name is WRIGLEY FIELD!

    Sacreligious ...

... they said the same about re-naming ‘Old Trafford’. It’d be a travesty to re-name Wrigley Field as … Milk Duds Park or something equally ridiculous.

Although such prestigious institutions rarely go through such name changes for the sake of marketing … do they?

P.S: I got the ‘Pampers’ joke! Hahahaha!

    everything is commercial

They can’t change the name of Wrigley. just being a fan of baseball it is a historic piece of baseball and it can’t be changed. But everything is commercial these days. Power plays never were sponsored in the old days and now every team has the PSE & G power play or stuff like that. here’s an Idea, The people who made the Nick show Pete and Pete should buy the rights and keep it Wrigley field because their last name on the show was Wrigley.

And the corporate wh_ring of America is complete

This is absurd. I can’t stand the Cubs (they stink to all holy hell), but this news is disturbing. It is a challenge keeping the names of the arenas/stadiums/rinks of today’s sports teams straight, simply because they mean nothing when they can be so easily bought and sold. Does anyone give two sh_ts that the Coyotes home rink in Glendale in Jobing.com Arena….my point exactly. Next year it’ll be something different and no one will remember or care….and that’s just one example. It’s just wrong.
