Sharks/Stars - A Game for the Ages

Monday May 05, 2008 @ 12:47 PM EDT

Zzzzzzz….. wha? Oh, sorry, a bit sleep deprived after the game last night – and I was just watching it.

What a hockey game! People across the country have called in sick from sheer exhaustion. For those of you who didn’t stay up until practically midnight, (west coast time!) the Sharks put out a valiant effort to come back from a 3-0 record. Unfortunately, they missed it by that much.

I was almost relieved when it was finally over – half way into the fourth OT period! – I was beginning to think people would start passing out from exhaustion and we’d see players skating around the collapsed bodies of their fellow teammates. Some of the guys looked like they could barely stand but they still played with everything they had.

My hat is well & truly off to both goalies. Turco and Nabby made superhuman saves out there last night and the fans were treated to some of the finest goal tending in playoff history.

It was fun while it lasted and though the season may be over for the boys in teal, they sure as hell went out on a high note! The team had its ups and downs, players sometimes not playing up to their abilities and sometimes playing well beyond them. We may have lost in the second round, but there were a lot of things to smile about this season:
the winning streak in March,
Nabby’s play all season long,
our rookies – speedy Mitchell & solid Setoguchi,
the acquisition of Brian Campbell,
the ageless JR,
Patty Marleau’s comeback,
and always – big Joe.

One thing I truly regret is not winning the Cup with JR, a great player and a class act. I hope he’ll be back next season and we can do it then.

Lastly, I’ve had a blast chatting with all the fans on NHL Connect. Sitting down with a cup of coffee and checking my boards became the favorite part of my morning routine. So, though the Sabres and the Sharks are resting up until October, there’s still hockey to be played and may the best team win!
