Good and Bad

Wednesday July 02, 2008 @ 07:07 PM EDT

The second day of free agency was good and bad for the Penguins.
I’ll start with the bad:
1. Marian Hossa’s defection to Detroit. I’m still stunned and a little bit upset by it.
2. Fan favorite Jarkko Ruutu signed a three year deal with Ottawa.

Now the Good:
1.Malkin is locked up for 5 years. This is great for the Pens. I guess that Russian Super League will have to look else where for a star forward.
2. Brooks Orpik signs a 6 year deal. Good news for the Pen who really need his physical style on the blue line.

I guess you just have to take the good with the bad and hope everything falls into place. I’m sure Ray Shero is working on getting another scoring winger to play on the first line.

Every year I hope the Penguins can win the Stanley Cup but I espically hope they win it this year just so we can have a good laugh in Marian Hossa’s direction. I know this sounds petty but I feel Hossa burned the Pens’ managment. He really did. He took his sweet time deciding what he was going to do, effectivly tying Ryan Shero’s hands until he knew how much he had to work with. I bet Ray would have made offers to other Free Agents out there but he didn’t know if he would have 7 million dollars tied up in Hossa. That’s the main reason I’m mad about the situation.
There is still more work to be done and more players to sign or not sign. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

    Agreed

One of the main things that pissed me off about the whole Hossa situation was the fact that Shero lost out on a few key players [ie Ruutu, Roberts, etc..] because he waited so long for Hossa. He’s probably just a rental for Detroit anyway… Joseph, anyone?

I do think, though, that the agent was driving the bus on that one… Even as a Leafs fan, I have an overwhelming urge to kick Ritch Winter in the balls, as previously stated.

And I still can’t believe that Ruutu is a Senator… I’m a Leafs fan in Ottawa, and I think I’m about ready to start crying over how much I’ll probably hate him in the future!

My condolences to the Pens and their fans… But I’d quite like to see them take Stanley this year, minus Marian… Talk about a kick in the arse!

    *sigh* Still Sad

I know what you mean about Hossa. He didn’t take much more than the Pens offered (if I remember correctly, didn’t we offer him $7M?)and he went to Detroit for $7.45M?) Maybe I’m doing fuzzy math.

I’m glad we have each other and other Pens fans to help us through this.

Taking the Good With the Bad

It seems like this free agency is a time for every team to take the good with the bad, unless you are Detroit. The only thing that could even be remotely close to bad is that they could not find a way to sign Hossa for longer than one year, but even that is not a bad thing. The Wings have to take care of Zetterberg and Franzen after next season, so one year was actually perfect for them.

    What?!

Ruutu left? Geez, now I’m bummed over that. Ok, I’ll get over it. Really all I gotta do is just think about Malone being with Tampa and I get happy again. Yes, Hossa did take his sweet time and that bugged me to a point. You’re right you take the good with the bad.

    Possible difference makers and/or contributors

    Joe Sakic…Pavol Demitra… Miroslav Satan…Brendan Shanahan (a mentor for the super twins)...Martin Straka…

    Slim pickens, but pickens nonetheless!
