Shoot

Paul Kukla is the man behind the excellent Kukla’s Korner blog site. The longtime NHL fan and devoted Red Wings’ supporter is joining NHL.com as a regular contributor this season. His blogs are a must read for hockey fans.
Detroit Red Wings fans can feel it. Pittsburgh Penguins fans can feel it too. Those feelings, some great, some bad.
Right now the feel good story is Detroit. They won’t stop doing what they do, but will try to improve on it when they hit the road for game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Pittsburgh on the other hand will need to start feeling good about themselves and there is only one way to do that , start scoring some goals!
Shoot from everywhere Pittsburgh. Shoot from the blueline, shoot from the corners, shoot, shoot from your own blueline. Just stop shooting from the mouth, let your game do the talking for you!
Talking about what should or could be done in regards to the officiating is not going to get the Penguins back into this series. Hard work, hard skating and not letting up on any shift will. Score first and often in game 3, then talk, until then, think about what needs to be done, not what has already passed.
It is not like Detroit has dominated in the goal scoring department. They have made the best of their opportunities by working for it and then working on defending their lead. The Penguins can do the same, or at least attempt to do it and see how Detroit reacts. The first goal has been huge during the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs and Pittsburgh needs that first goal badly.
The Inside View
I have made some observations while covering all the action from games 1 and 2 in Detroit.
Chris Simpson, the NHL reporter for Versus is as down to earth as they come. Her work continues to improve and I enjoyed speaking with her yesterday about the game of hockey.
I can’t tell you how impressed I was with the folks from CBC. In the past I have communicated with them from time to time, but they went out of their way to make me feel comfortable when around them. Now if only I could get my hands on one of those CBC towels!
Do the writers who cover this game all year long get tired feet? Mine are about twice the size of normal right now and need relief, quickly.
I am still waiting for Barry Melrose to take off his sun glasses. The future must be bright for Barry.
I ran into Elliotte Friedman of CBC and E.J. Hradek of ESPN more than any other media type. We must be on the same wave-length.
Penguins fans were out in full force in Detroit. They were loud and proud, now need a victory for all of their hard work.
The folks from NHL.com, specifically the writers, welcomed me with open arms. They have moved on to Pittsburgh, leaving me behind, but I just may be seeing them again very soon.
My best personal moment of the weekend- Chatting with Ron MacLean of Hockey Night in Canada. You know Ron, my nickname is ‘Kook’, much better than ‘Grapes’.
My town, Motown, sure did shine this weekend. Over two million people visited over the last four days, all without a major incident.

I always enjoy your blogs and this one is no exception. Nice insights into the media end and very nice homage to MoTown.

Detroit shines again
That’s great to hear. I’m glad the locals continue to honor our great team by showing some class. Nobody pooring beer on the opposing players or burning up the streets after only one win. I remember when the Tigers won the WS in ‘84 and how embarrased I was as a fan. Then when the Wings finally won the cup in ’97 I was so proud of the city because they handled it all with the dignity that our great captain Stevie Y would have expected. I think the kind of leadership he showed throughout his career is why Detroit doesn’t have the same problems other cities do, at least with our hockey team, when we win. This series is still not over but if the Pens don’t do as you suggest, forget the refs and shoot the puck, then we’ll be getting another shot at showing how to win with class.
