My letter to Sam Gagner

Monday March 17, 2008 @ 07:19 PM EDT

Dear Sam,

Being drafted into the NHL at such a young age, has led to you becoming someone that I look up to and admire. The hard work and determination that you show day in and day out have contributed to the influence that you have on me. I hope that one day I can pursue my dreams, just as you have.

For the past four years I have engaged in all Edmonton Oilers games, whether it is by television, in person, or on the radio. This team has inspired me because of the dedication, perseverance, and enthusiasm that are shown on and off the ice. These are some of the traits that I wish to carry on into my adult life. One of my wishes would be to meet you in person as you are my hero. You prove that hockey is more than just a sport it is a lifestyle.

I thought that when Ryan Smyth was traded there would be no one that could replace his spot in my heart. The summer came and went and the beginning of the season started. I can remember the first time I saw you skating out on the ice; you played like each game was your last. You gave it your all and that is when I felt like that empty space in my heart had just been filled.

Love,
Kayla
