Here To Stay

Monday February 25, 2008 @ 12:19 PM EST

I think I’m blind to the fact that the Leafs’ record is lousy because for some reason they seem to pull out a win whenever I watch the game. Save for a couple games in there, San Jose, etc etc. Are they really THAT bad? Because I’m not seeing it. Or do I just always seem to miss the 8 goal losses and devastating injuries? What I do not know, cannot hurt me I suppose.

First of all, on a serious note, I was teary eyed watching Coach’s Corner the other night when they addressed the death of Mickey Renaud earlier last week. What a tragedy. As a hockey fan, it really hits close to home. Especially when I think about that this kid was my around my brother’s age, and I have friends in junior hockey and to think about how close they all are and how much a captain means to a team is absolutely heartbreaking. My sentiments go out to anyone who was a family member, friend, teammate, fan, and anyone who was touched by this tragedy. I know I’m a little late in my response to the situation but it is something that is still weighing on me, and probably a lot of you as well.

It looks as though the big Ched Mats Sundin is sticking to his guns on the no-trade clause of his contract and staying in Toronto. Was I the only one who believed that nothing was going to happen with that one? I mean after so much hype about him being traded, I almost have feeling a lot of people are partly disappointed that he’s not going. I for one just have to say this: I’m proud to have Mats as the captain of my team, and everyone in Toronto should feel the same. Were you really about to lose the one guy, a great player and a legend, who still has faith in this team? It would have been a dumb move. Mats Sundin is 110% committed to the Toronto Maple Leafs, he manages to look past all the off-ice drama of past and present season and keep doing his job, he refuses to sell out, he’s a fantastic leader and a national treasure. He wants to retire as a Leaf, hell he will probably be buried in old number 13 someday. He’s a lifer. You can’t ask for a better captain than that. Let’s take a moment to appreciate Mats for his decision. He said in a statement:

“I have always believed I would finish my career as a Toronto Maple Leaf so the actual request was still a very difficult one for me to contemplate”……………”I cannot leave my teammates and join another NHL club at this time,” Sundin added. “I have never believed in the concept of a rental player. It is my belief that winning the Stanley Cup is the greatest thing you can achieve in hockey, but for me, in order to appreciate it you have to have been part of the entire journey and that means October through June. I hope everyone will understand and respect my decision.”

If that doesn’t make a believer out of you then you should probably walk out of the metaphorical door of the Air Canada Center right now. Mats Sundin is no sell out, he is one of very few players who is still down for the cause, one of the few pure hockey players left. You can’t buy or sell that kind of commitment and passion. In the end we’ll end up remembering him as just that, the man knows how to leave his mark. And you wanted to replace him with some skilled hotshot money-maker? You should feel like an a$$hole. Death or glory, it’s just another story.

The one thing the Trade Deadline Fairy didn’t leave me this year? Tony Amonte. Double you-tee-eff, Fairy? Where is he? I was hoping all season he would sign somewhere before the TD. Don’t let me down now, at crunch time. I’ll admit, I’m already a bit heart broken about it. Tony, if you’re reading this, get your silly pen ready and sign a damn contract already. I miss you. Sorry about the tough love, bro.

Thank god the trade deadline is almost over. I cannot wait to get back to some stress free hockey. Well not totally stress free, playoffs are creeping up on us real fast here. Here’s a theory for you, why can’t the Leafs just throw every single remaining game of the season, just lose them all, and build up the worst record in the NHL in order to receive the first draft pick? Hey, it’s just an idea. No one would be the wiser… HA! First picks are overrated anyway.

Well, I apologize for being a little out of commish the last couple weeks. I know I’ve been bad about replying to emails and comments, I’ll try to fix that. I do read them though, and I appreciate everything you guys send my way, so XL thanks. I promise to have an entertaining blog or two up soon. Keep your fingers crossed until after February 26th. Peace, love, and hockey y’all.

    Late to this

I still think what he did is noble, but for the franchise it is not a good thing. Cant rebuild if you stay put. I do like Matts, always have just in this situation I guess its tough and I cant know how it feels. Good man he is, but the no-trade is bad for the franchise long term.

    Trade Deadline Day

I skipped out on University just to watch the trade deadline on TSN. Much to my disappointment the Canadian teams did nothing except for the Habs getting rid of Huet….........and they’re trying to be contenders huh. PS like the blogs and always seem to giggle a bit when you say things like “Double you-tee-eff, Fairy?” It’s funny as H-E-Double Hockey Sticks.

    Thoughts on Trade Day

Well, I was busy the entire day so I’m just getting caught up on all the trade happenings. My first reaction looking at the Leafs moves is that a) their penalty killing is going to suffer big-time in the short term and b) they’ve lost some intimidating physical presence. Without Kilger’s hits and Belak’s enforcement, I think many of the Leafs could be sitting ducks for the remainder of the season in much the same way Kaberle befell the actions of Cam Janssen late last season. Remember how nobody stepped up? The Leafs are already thought of as pushovers by the rest of the league and this does not help their situation. I hope to some extent this is rectified in the off-season.

However, I am glad Cliff was able to obtain the picks he needs to lay a foundation for some more young talent to come into this organization. It was refreshing for a change to see the Leafs call a spade a spade at the trade deadline and consider themselves sellers, rather than give the future away from short-term benefit (that benefit has been questionable over the past several seasons). With the Marlies doing quite well I think we’ll see a few bright spots coming into play here on the horizon.

The cap room that has been freed up by Hal Gill’s contract is important. The Leafs’ talent on D throughout the organization is extensive though not necessarily strong, but I think if Carlo, Ian and Anton can stay healthy they can pick up the void left by Gill. Yet again, they’re going to miss his size and he saved this team quite a few times on 5 on 3s this season.

All in all, it was a hohum day for the Leafs but what can we expect with our best trade bait holding those clauses? All things considered, I like the fact that they’re conceding defeat to an extent this season and looking forward to building things for the future. Heck, if the defensive game suffers in the short term maybe they can inch closer to the premium picks this summer. If not, scouting has been working overtime and should have their bases covered.

    You Wanna know why?

Let me tell you about the maple leafs. Living in Toronto and playing on a team that shares the Air canada centre, i get to see it first hand. The Leafs sell out every single game. So there is no need to put a winning product on the ice. Doesnt matter if theyre winning or losing, people will. SO there just isnt that sense of urgency that other teams seem to have during their losing seasons. You wonder why the Canadiens win every decade? because no one will go to the games if they are not winning. Toronto seems to fill there team with end of their career players, or they will sign these free agents who the year prevous over played their potential..finally, they fill their team with 3rd/4th line players. Im sorry, but stajan, steen, Belak, kilger, antropov..those guys would have trouble making any other team.
Now players have stop playing for Maurice…so he needs to go. They lose games they should win, or win games they lose…but who is to say with that team…they should be the last place team in the league with those players.
As for Sundin, he is a selfish P rick You listen to all his interviews and he is all “I” want to stay in toronto. “I” Dont want to be a rental player. “I.. I… I… I” He only cares about himself. He doesnt care about toronto. He doesnt care about bettering this team at all. Since they were not able to trade him for prospects, now they have to play the waiting game and see if he resigns. Which he has given no indication that he will. He is 37 and mark my words, he is walk at the end of the year leaving the leafs holding is privates and nothing to compensate that loss. IF he cared so much about this team, he would have accepted a trade, better this team with prospects and MAYBE a roster player and then resigned at the end of the season.

    Double standard

I just can’t get the fans who are upset with Sundin for not waiving the clause. These are the same people who complain about player loyalty. You can’t have it both ways…Once in a lifetime a player of Mats’ caliber comes along and says “I’m stickin with my team through good and bad” and he gets hammered for it. Gimme a break. I actually have more respect for him now. This is the kinda player I’d pay money to go see…great blog, as always Laur.

    A Rarity

Sundin’s loyalty is something that you don’t see too much anymore in the league. Players now a days leave at the first sign of more money. I give him credit for staying with the team that unfortunatly won’t win a cup in his time. He proved he still has some game left against ottawa.

    Turning point?

I always believed he would stay, maybe I’m being biased because I love the guy so much and could never picture him in anything other than a Leafs shirt. Still find it strange to see old pics of him in a Quebec one.
I definitely agree with Ninh’s point of many players jumping at the sign of a bigger paypacket, and so it’s admirable to see some degree of loyalty left in the league. He proved the nay-sayers wrong in style last night against Ottawa and hopefully this is the spark needed to turn the season round and make a late surge for the playoffs. Long shot but it’s still not too late!

    does

anyone question Mats desire to win a cup? I don’t get it… He has no chance in Toronto even if he plays till he’s 50… Isn’t that the dream of every hockey player? Loyalty’s great but he’s being loyal to a fault!

Mats had every right to stay!

Sundin does not have to waive he’s no trade clause just to bail out JFJ. Sure the leafs will probably gain another year or two of rebuilding but Mats doesnt owe the leafs nothing. He played he’s butt off while MLSE gave him really no support as in a winger(s).
Whats even more sad is Mats probably wont be back next year so we should enjoy the last 20 games with him in the line up. We should all respect Mats decision as he said “I’m following my heart”.

    gee,

wake up Laughs fans. Sundin’s loyalty is a joke. If he loved Toronto as much as he says he does, he would have waived that NTC and gone as a rental to, say, Anaheim or the Flyers for some prospects and/or picks, finished the season there, then returned to Toronto in a couple of months with a Stanley Cup and spring in his step and had some good, new, young players to play with, but no, his arrogance and greed have take over and he refused a plea from the clubs front office to help the future of the club and is staying put. Now he really has fan power because you all believe he did it for the club. Bo**ocks. Thats as laughable as Forsberg saying he came back to help Colorado, he came back for one thing and one thing only $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Sundin will either leave Toronto as a free agent in the summer or retire and then see where loyalty gets you.
