Straight Outta Spokompton!

Sunday May 25, 2008 @ 02:33 PM EDT

First order of business, today is the FINAL game of the Memorial Cup Championship… the match-up: Kitchener vs Spokane. If I had it my way, everyone in Washington State would know about this and we’d all be piling into a giant stadium watching it on the Jumbo-tron like those wonderful Pittsburgh Penguins fans were last night.

That’ll be the day.

This is a huge deal for Washington, the Chiefs are more than likely to be the winningest sports team in the state this year, and no one has any idea. I believe just a couple of seasons ago the organization was offering refunds to their season ticket holders if the Chiefs failed to make the playoffs… again. It’s a long way to the top for a US Division team, who hasn’t seen the Memorial Cup in 10 years. This is cause to celebrate, something we Washington State hockey fans can be proud of. No hockey in the Northwest? Well today we have a team.

For those of you lucky enough to be able to catch the game (hello Canada), I highly suggest you don’t miss it..
And for those of us who have to miss it, keep the faith. Best of luck (though they hardly need it) to the Spokompton Chiefs. And more importantly, congratulations you big shots. Bring it home boys.

A couple other quick points to make while I’m here…
The Stanley Cup kicked off last night with the Detroit “Iron Man” Red Wings shutting out the Pittsburgh Penguins in game uno.

Mikkael Samuelsson.. where the balls did you come from? That reach-around goal was fantastic (and yes, in the spirit of maturity, I meant to misname it).

New game plan: KEEP HOLSTROM OUT OF THE P-BOX.

Where did Malkin go? I didn’t feel his presence on the ice at all last night… Missing in inaction?

If beauty came in the form of a man in bulky pads and a Red sweater, it would be named Chris Osgood. His ‘tending was unbelievable. This really is his season. Hard work beats talent?

On the other end of the ice, MAF was not having such a fabulous night.. all starting with him totally eating it while making his entrance onto the ice. I thought "Oh sh*t.. that can’t be a good sign..“. It wasn’t. Let’s blame that bail, not nerves, for throwing off his game.

I’m going to go on record saying that I predict that last night’s game is the worst the Penguins will do all series. I do not believe that game 1 was any indication of what the rest of the series will look like. It’s all uphill from here boys.

Lots of hockey action tonight and tomorrow. Lucky lucky you. Enjoy!

Dude, he was truckin’ it out of that hallway too… first Stanley Cup game of your life and you eat some serious ish. I love the two jokers in the Red Wings jerseys just laughing their asses off. Ahh memories in the making…

    Fired up

is how I’d expect the Pens to come out tonight, but they need a little more staying power to play a full 60 minutes against the Hot (chipotle?) Wings. Aside from the first period (and bolstereed by four PP chances), the Pens looked very flat. Despite Fleury’s gaffe, I thought he looked good it net. It was BAAAAD turnovers on Dupuis’ and Malkin’s part that led to those first 2 goals (and how often is it you see a guy get not one, but TWO unassisted goals in a single game?). Pens better have Roberts in the lineup to keep the kids interested, and more importantly, focused. And congrats to the Chiefs, they earned beating Kitchener TWICE on the Rangers’ home ice.

    nice

congrats to the chiefs, sucks about the cup falling apart, tho. Oh well, they still won. I got to catch the Kitchener-Belleville game, and got a little worried for your guys (9-0? ouch…) but they pulled it out. Celebrate, the fans deserve it.

    Go Chiefs

Even way down here in the Bayou in the Deep south the Chiefs have fans. I proudly wear my ‘Check em Chiefs’ T shirt and have cheered them on. The shirt came via an old friend but since I got it I’ve been a Chiefs fan. Go Chiefs. AND GO WINGS!

    yeah

I think the Pens probably learned a lot and will play better. I hear there are some line changes in the works. Like Malone playing with Sid and Hossa on the top line. I expect Gary Roberts will be back in the line up too. It was only one game and I think it will be long series. The Pens won’t win them all.

    Go Kitchener

I’m completely neutral between these 2 teams, but there’s a Canadiens draft pick named Yannick Weber on Kitchener’s roster, so I want him to have success as early as possible. It is a big deal for young players to learn how to win. For instance, the Habs’ farm team in the AHL won the Calder Trophy last season and 6 players of that team finished this season as a Montreal Canadiens.
    .
I agree that the Pens will play better from now on, but I stick to my prediction: Wings in 5.

    Definetely

going to watch it!! Can’t wait! But sry Laur, GO KITCHENER! Haha and I did end up cheering for the wings last night even though they eliminated my stars. I hope Lidstrom becomes the first european captain to win the cup.
