I Am Lauren's Playoff Thoughts

Saturday April 19, 2008 @ 06:46 PM EDT

First order of business… Since so many of you inquired, and people don’t bother to read blogs anymore (YouTube killed the blogosphere star), I’m going to say this here one time only:
I am NOT stating aloud who, or even if I am supporting a particular team during the playoffs. Simply because in the past, every team I lean towards gets magically eliminated from the Stanley Cup race. Yes, I have the bad touch.
Actually you know what, let’s try this…. GO HABS! GO DUCKS! GO WILD! GO RED WINGS! Woooooo! There are my picks. Word.

I also want to discuss something with you hockey fans. And this needs to be said. So take a knee boys..
Okay, can we refrain from using the term “one more win!”? It is widely believed that throwing out the “one more” is the biggest jinx in the book. You don’t ever, EVER say “one more”. It ranks right ahead of the word “shutout” spoken before the end of the game. Instead try saying something like “another”… “another win would be nice”. Listen closely to this San Jose fans… Dallas fans have learned their lesson. Believe it, just don’t say it. Talk is cheap.

I’ve been watching a lot of Versus lately. Mostly because I don’t get CBC in HD. As much as I love Ron and Kelly, being able to actually see the numbers on the jerseys, and every visible drop of sweat shed trumps CBC’s fantastic coverage (and Kelly Hrudey’s pretty mug). Anyway regarding Versus, is it just me or do those “I am the Stanley Cup Playoffs” promos totally bring to mind the whole “I am Jack’s colon” thing from Fight Club? Did anyone else think of that one? His name is Samuel Pahlsson. His name is Samuel Pahlsson………. Go Ducks!

I am Kelly Hrudey’s hair products.

I haven’t missed a single minute of the thrilling San Jose/Calgary series. Fantastic series. Flames, Sharks, Flames, Sharks, loves me, loves me not. This one is definitely going to game seven. I’d be shocked if it doesn’t. There are too many good things to say about both teams, whom I love, and in true serial-dater fashion will not admit to which way I’m leaning. A lot of people were skeptical of this match-up. These teams have different styles, but both have a lot of character and it makes for a fun series. Which so far has completely delivered.

I am the Power Play Chomp.

I am the C of Red.

Speaking of Fight Club, I’m thinking the Sharks should engage in some locker boxing, and take turns punching each other in the face. It seems luck has been on the side of those rocking the shiner. Ryane Clowe, who looks like you’d imagine a hockey player would, is riding a team-leading 8 points. Likewise, Patty Marleau, the big C, has been racking up the points and some major ice time after being on the receiving end of the now famous Cory Sarich hit. That elbow would have killed a lesser man, but Patty was up for it, and has pretty much been playing with one eye since. Torrey Mitchell has been getting some serious ice time in this series, he’s been on the PK, the PP, the PIMP, you name it. I see him so much it’s bordering on irritating but you know, Mitchy deserves it. He’s playing like he’s got something to prove, and so far he’s proving it. In fact, let’s throw this compliment out to all the young guns in the Sharks lineup. Mitchell, Little Joe (Pavelski), Guch, and Pickles…. Bravo. It’s good to see the young guys get in on the action and actually contribute, I’m happy to see them getting increasingly more ice time, they earned it.

I am the “E” at the end of Ryane Clowe’s first name.

Now to the other end of the ice: The C of Red. Wow. I don’t think anyone, especially the Sharks organization, expected the Flames to be this dominant. To be honest, I’d say the Flames have dominated most of the games played in this series, even the ones they lost. This is the Calgary Flames that I know and love, just balls to the walls physical action. What can you say? San Jose’s got the skills, but Calgary’s got the balls… I mean you decide which trait you think wins more games, but IMO Calgary is a team that knows how to win games….watch out Sharkies. So far I’ve seen an energetic, confident team, who finishes checks, isn’t afraid to shoot, and is tough to get around. I’m more impressed than usual. The obvious standouts are Jarome Iginla, best Captain in the game; and Dion Phaneuf, this year’s Norris winner (admit it, he’s got it in the bag). Also my man Owen Nolan has gotten a lot of ice time, the old vet has been key in Calgary’s game.

I am Cory Sarich’s elbow.

All but one of the games have resulted in a mere one-point difference, and at this point I think it’s anyone’s series. Don’t know about you, but I’m psyched to see how this all plays out. Tune in Sunday for Game 6, some good old fashion physical West Coast hockey. After all, you “don’t wanna die without any scars”.
