Your Winter Classic/Tavares Watch

Wednesday July 09, 2008 @ 01:53 AM EDT

If you could set up a Winter Classic, what two teams would play and where would they play?

2 things. First is about the chase for Tavares. Second is the Winter Classic.

Tavares watch. Im not usually one to point the finger at a team and say they’re calling it quits, especially when it’s a team I like such as the leafs. However, I just cant seem to shake the feeling that the leafs are doing whatever they can to be the worst team in the league and get Tavares in the draft. Then there’s also the thrashers who despite being one of the worst teams last season have done almost nothing to improve themselves but add one defenseman.

I really dont think a team would aim to the worst to get the No 1 pick. To me a season as worst in the league is too damaging to a team. I don’t think the pens aimed for Crosby. I don’t think the lightning aimed for Stamkos. Maybe they did in the second half of the season. I don’t know. But I just don’t think it’s right for a team to throw away a season to aim for someone. Although nowadays a team can easily say “yeah we can toss this season out, get the first pick then come back and maybe win the cup” because truly any team can win the cup these days, so I can see where teams would get their thought process from.

Winter Classic. I love the Winter Classics. I think they’re the second-best if not the best games of the season. I mean really, can it get any better than last season’s Penguins-Sabres matchup? That was the best game in terms of weather and score. And Crosby won it in the shootout, cant get much better than that. Although the ice delays got rather annoying…

Anyways the NHL is looking to Chicago’s Wrigley Field for this upcoming season’s location to host the Blackhawks and Red Wings. It’ll be a hell of a game with an amazing crowd and atmosphere. I just hope it’s the same weather conditions as the last Winter Classic. Not only will this help the Hawks’ boost in publicity, but it will help the fandom too with the location at Wrigley Field. Looking forward to one hell of a game on new year’s day! (I really was hoping they’d play at yankee Stadium this year, but oh well, it’s all good).

Here in Dallas, the new Cowboys stadium is being built. It’ll be one of the biggest, nicest stadiums in the US and I cant help but wonder…. What if the Stars hosted a Winter Classic in the new stadium? I know we only get snow 3 days a year and there’s almost no way the Stars will ever beat out the Cowboys in the headlines. It would be a really nice stadium to play and the weather would be crisp. But that’s probably not enough to bring a game here. Especially considering we don’t really have a huge rivalry. Well we are rivals with the wings but they kill us every time we play so I doubt they’d set a game up against the Wings. I think it would be best to keep the games where it’s snowy and there’s a huge fan base, but I cant help but imagine the Stars playing in the middle of that amazing stadium.

I’d like to see Bruins vs. Canadiens at Fenway or Detroit vs. THE BADGERS at LAMBEAU

    W.C.

Pens v Flyers at Beaver Stadium in State College Pa. These two team are huge rivals and I believe the stadium holds close to 100,000. State College is roughly half way between the two cities so fans of both teams could get there easily.

    chicago vs detriot

its for sure i think, last i checked, being from chicago. there looking at either soldier field or wrigley. personally, i would like them to play at soldier field, even tho itd be hell trying to get there but im tryin to aim tickets for christmas for that game, so i think it would be awesome to see chicago and detriot in the winter classic. i think chicagos a good pick for this game, even detriot, due to the fact that both cities get REALLY cold weather and tons of snow, so an outdoor game would be fun in the city and it really would boost the blackhawks publicity.

as much as im not a yankee fan, i really wouldnt have minded a rangers maybe devils game in the classic this coming season, as a last thing to do before knocking down yankee stadium, but that really isnt going to happen.

    Teams can't

“aim” to get the #1 pick. There is still the draft lottery to consider.

As for the Winter Classic I would love to see it in Soldier Field personally. Wrigley will be fine as well I guess.

The other theories for this year’s Winter Classic were Pens/Flyers in Happy Valley at Penn State University, something that Joe Pa contested vehemently, or the final event at Yankee Stadium being a showdown for the Rangers and the Bruins, something that clearly fell through.

A winter classic though will never be held anywhere south of probably Washington. And even Washington is a stretch. The point of it being a Winter Classic is that the outdoor game must be able to include ice. Unless it’s a dome, even in the winter it would be hard to schedule the perfect time and date that anywhere in the south would have cold weather, and a dome would defeat the purpose of a “Winter Classic” inherently. Sorry, but I think you’re out of luck buddy.
