"Russian" Caps, High-Flying Habs, and now dangerous Penguins...

Monday May 05, 2008 @ 01:46 PM EDT

David currently plays FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth on the FOX drama Bones. Though he was born in Buffalo, David will be following his Philadelphia Flyers throughout Stanley Cup Playoffs.

First of all, I have a couple games I feel the need to comment on, since I haven’t been able to get to a computer lately.

So Game 4, when Briere scored that power-play goal in the third, I was dancing on the table. People must’ve thought I was nuts.

There was a scary moment for me during that game, however, and it didn’t have everything to do with the score. The signal went out on our screen, and I couldn’t watch for about 15 minutes early in the game and I was going nuts.

Luckily, we were able to put the feed back together, or I’d have had to bolt the set to watch the game and wrap my scenes up afterwards; more than a few people would’ve been annoyed with that, I imagine.

Anyway, that Game 4 was a pivotal game, with Briere scoring the goal after Montreal tied it up. I almost didn’t want to watch, with Montreal coming back, because it gets to be such a stressful activity. I stuck it out though, and I have to hand it to the Canadiens; the way they battled – it was a good series.

Montreal is such a skilled team, and things moved so fast in each individual game that the series felt like a whirlwind. To come out of Washington and go on the road in the Bell Center, to split their first homestand against the Canadiens, it was a fantastic feat.

Not to take away from the Habs – they have a ton of young players and that goaltender Price is going to be a great player, a hall-of-famer. He was struggling a little bit there and he was pulled for Halak in Game 4, but you can tell he knows how to play.

In fact, I thought Price played a pretty decent game in Game 5. The problem for him and the rest of the Canadiens was that the “puck-luck” was going Philly’s way this round. And he’ll be fine – he’ll work on his glove side, come back, and be the same goaltender he was in the last few weeks of the season.

Looking back on it, that was the turning point: the 3-2 goal. After that things kind of exploded. And it almost seemed like Philly was destined to win.

The more I watch this team, the more I realize that the Flyers are an exciting team to watch. With players like Richards, Briere, Timonen, Carter, Prospal – and even some of the younger guys that have stepped up – this team is fast, skilled, and willing to work.

And of course I can’t say enough about Marty Biron and how he solidified everything for us. It was a great series a lot of fun to watch. The last eight minutes of Game 5 were absolutely fantastic to watch; just great hockey. My son was going crazy – it was back-and-forth and that’s what I love about the game.

The speed and saves were great, both teams played their hearts out and it’s great to see everyone contributing. Our hats are off to Montreal – they’re a great organization.

Now, looking forward:

I’m going to enjoy playing Pittsburgh, I think – the all-Pennsylvania series. I’m not going to be as kind to the Pitt fans in this one as I was to the Habs fans. Philly is going to come out in Game 1 and set the tone, playing that physical style that has taken us this far already. It’s going to be pretty heavy.

And all you Flyers’ fans remember: Pittsburgh may have ducked us to get Ottawa in the last game of the season, but they can’t duck us anymore. Crosby, you can’t run – and know this! We can take care of Crosby and Malkin. We’ve taken care of the offensive Caps and the high-flying Habs, so next up is Pittsburgh.

They’re another great team with depth, just like Washington, just like Montreal. And we have the upper-hand in that the last time we faced them in the playoffs was when Primeau scored in the 5th OT to win it – and get this: last night’s 4OT thriller was the anniversary of that game! Ironic that it went like that.

So that’s my little Round 2 recap and Round 3 preview. The Cup is actually coming to visit the HOUSE set this week, and I’m going to make sure it stops by the BONES set as well, so I can take a look at it and give it a little Philly love and hopefully take some photos and post them up here.

It’s an all-Penn series, and I’ll break down Game 1 before Friday. I have to gather my strength. No ole! anymore – congrats to Montreal, Godspeed to the Flyers, and hopefully we take care of business and take the Eastern Conference and head on to see the best of the West.

We’ll see you soon.

    Pens will be ready

You’re a great actor David, but its time to deviate from your call on this one. I figured the Flyers would beat the Caps and the Habs. I’ve been yearning for this all Pa series, and its finally here.
I heard the Flyers were going to match up Derian Hatcher with Sidney Crosby. If this is seriously true, Stevens has me baffled. That’s gotta be the worst decision of the playoffs so far. If the plan is to anger Crosby, I’m all for it, he plays better when he’s angry. The biggest reason I think the Pens are going to win this series is the fact that we have a superstar on 2 lines. Who do you focus on? Crosby’s line or Malkin’s line? It’s a tough question.

    Totally agree...

I said before that I only started watching during this playoffs. But persoanlly, I have to say that people need to stop playing the ‘inexperienced’ re: Price. If he didn’t have talent, he wouldn’t have gotten as far as he did. And the Flyers EARNED this chance. I’m a Habs fan first and foremost. But I give credit where credit is due. I actually can’t wait until Friday to see how things go. They have the ability to go all the way. And I sincerely hope they do. Price WILL come back next year, better than before thanks to the experience he gained this year. And we DO have experienced players. Even I know that. Just wasn’t in the cards for us this year. Good luck, Mr. B. I don’t think you will need it though. But, that’s just MY gut talking. Could be wrong but don’t think so. Here’s to Philly!

    What the...

I feel the need to comment on a few things. Virginie, I`m a Habs fan but I don`t agree with you. We can`t use the “inexperienced and young” card. We had Koivu, Brisebois, Kovalev and a few others who ARE experienced. We didn`t play as a team like the Flyers did and we just have to accept it. I thought it was an exciting series to watch even if we didn`t win. We did our best but it wasn`t enough.
And what is it with the stupid nicknames? I could use one for the Flyers, the Cinderella team. Every year, there`s one team that barely makes it and surprises the hell out of everyone and in 2008, the title goes to the Flyers. They made the series at the last possible moment and they`re now in the Conference finals. If anybody says it`s luck, they`re mistaken. It takes talent to make it that far.
The Flyers, in my opinion, are on cloud 9 right now and I don`t think anybody is going to stop them. As I said, they weren`t even sure of making the playoffs!!
And of course, there`s dirty play…PLAYOFFS, people!
Flyers fans? Even though you eliminated the Habs, I`m on your side and I hope the team goes all the way and brings home the Cup.

    Thank You

Flyersrok I just wanted to say thank you for making it so I’m not the only one to defend the Flyers from pointless criticism also, if you go down to Disco_Stu’s post you’ll see I posted a reply with some other good points to make. Now PP66 I appreciate the low level of hostility you wrote with but I have one complaint, the call of “dirty play” from the Flyers. Let me recall two games from the regular season and two plays that were completely unecessary by the Pens and went completely overlooked by officials. Now mind you I don’t remember exact dates or anything I just have memory of how angry I was to go on; The first play was when Marty had skated behind his net to play the puck around for I believe it was Jason Smith and in flew Crosby from the far side of the ice behind Biron blatently sticking out his stick and tripping Biron. The second made me even more angry more because of how the officials ignored it, I don’t remember exactly who it was for the Pens but he came around his own net playing the puck with Scott Hartnell in hot pursuit and when Hartnell got too close he was sent to the ice and into the boards with a quick hit to the nose (breaking it) from the butt of the Pens players stick. Now don’t get me wrong, I will admit my Flyers do some dirty things but you can’t try to act like the Pens are saints who would never commit a penalty. Dirty play is a part of the game of hockey, it happens. PP66 I would also like you to read my reply to Disco_Stu as again, there are some points I made in that post that I would like all Pens fans to see.
For the rest of Pens fans (and notice Most Flyers fans haven’t resorted to making up stupid nicknames for the Pens) I think they are scared that the Flyers have found their playoff swagger once more and are surging right now. As for the Habs fans, you have every right to be bitter, I’m sure a good majority of Flyers fans would have been bitter if it went the other way around, making excuses and such as to why the Habs won; but you can’t make excuses like, “We’re too young and inexperienced” when you’re team had the best record in the East. And yes I know playoff hockey is different than the regular season but as Flyersrok has said (and pardon the correction) more than half of the flyers team has never seen the playoffs either. My point is, that what is the use in arguing, admit defeat, and worry about next year when hopefully your team can pull off the same thing and go even further now that they have the taste of the playoffs.

    Comeback

First of all I got to say Dave I love your blogs keep up the good work, me and you see eye-to-eye on almost everything. Second I have alot of things to say about the comments some of the people have left.
To Disco_Stu, everything you said makes no sense. Yes the pens tanked the game. They were on the power play half of the game and still had less shots and no goals. And the “cryers” this coming from a guy who’s team is captained by the biggest bit* to ever play the game of hockey. And you did win 3 in a row against us but did you forget we won 4 in row before that, with Crosby in the lineup . yeah you may have had your entire team intact but the flyers had half of their team out you idiot, including our best player in Gagne who has missed the entire season. your remarks are irrelevant.
Virginie, The reason you didn’t think it was a good series to watch is because your team was beat in 5 games, and lost the last 4. And experience is a bull crap excuse half of the flyers team hasn’t played a playoff game before this year, most of them being very young players.
Penssid87, Crosby was in the games like I said for the games the flyers have won. The games the pens won the bit
    * I meant Crosby was out. And please don’t be too happy about sweeping us last year. We were the worst team in the league, it’s not a great accomplishment. Another dumb ass stat by a pens fan. It may be the year of the penguin, but it’s also penguin season and the flyers are going hunting.
Finally, I hate when people say things like, they wouldn’t have won if it wasn’t for biron and umberger. It’s not like we stole these guys, they are a part of this TEAM. There are new hero’s in every series that’s what makes a good TEAM, a champion.

    Experience needed

    Mr.Boreanaz,
As much as I enjoyed watching Angel, I have to say I disagree with you on this last entry of yours. I am a Montreal fan, so my opinion might be a bit subjective, but i don’t think this serie against the Flyers was an exiting one to watch. Maybe it is due to the fact that both teams were playing two different games; one being faster, one being bigger, slower, but tougher. I have never really liked the Flyers as a team, but I love Daniel Brière and R.J Umberger was quite impressive in the last games. But I think, Philadelphia did not play well in this serie, got lucky goals, and tried to intimidate the young Price verbally and physically. I know this is the way the game is played, but I don’t think it added anything to the show. When I watch hockey, I expect to be impressed by both teams, appreciate every play; this serie seemed to be a robbery from the Flyers. Montreal was stronger 4 games out of 5, the results didn’t go this way. I have to admit, the whole excitement was given by Martin Biron, who I thought was a goalie nothing more thant mediocre when he played for buffalo as a second hand man but he was incredible against Montreal.
Montreal has a young team that has everything to learn. I don’t think they have what they need to face Detroit or Dallas, but, I don’t think the flyers have it either.
I am still in shock that Montreal lost this serie, we have to give the credit to the Flyers who found the secret to montreal’s powerplay, and were able to profit Price’s weaknesses on the glove’ side. I hate R.J Umberger now, I wish he had been on Montreal’s line up for this serie, he was a key player, very annoying for us, Canadiens’ fans.
I think in the end, Montreal wasn’t experienced enough to go very far in the series… Pittsburg has a quite young team too, lets say they were lucky!
Hockey is just a game after all, what would it be without all the rivalry it creates!
I now wish Pittsburg wins in 4… I bet if Pittsburg had eliminated Montreal, I would be on your side, with your Flyers and your orange Jersey.
    Good luck anyway!

    Am I the only one?

David, I enjoy your blogs, but seriously, am I the only Flyers fan that doesn’t believe the Pens threw the last game so they could face the Sens instead of the Flyers?
I mean so what they sat out Crosby (after all, high ankle sprain takes a long time to heal, probably not a bad idea to sit him out)...but I mean they still were facing, Gonchar, and Fluery in net and oh-yeah, 2 people named Hossa and Malkin…and if I recall that game, the Pens were all over them for at least the 1st period.
As a Flyers fan I think it’s more beneficial thinking they shut out a highly offensive team ((even with out Crosby) then to tthink they tanked it.

    Awesome

I agree that it is a stressful event watching the Flyers games. As much as I am looking forward to the start of the Eastern Conference Finals, I am dreading it because I know it will be back to not being able to eat or sleep until it is over. Great post! Let’s Go Flyers!!!

    Hey David!

Nice (even though it’s a sad thing) to see I’m not the only one having trouble getting to a computer at times. But I have to admit I’m surprised to see a guy like you has that kind of troubles….
Anyway, keep those blogs coming, and good luck to your team!
I had the opportunity to see the Cup last summer, and it certainly is an awesome thing!
