Not cocky, just confident

Thursday April 17, 2008 @ 03:46 PM EDT

David currently plays FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth on the FOX drama Bones. Though he was born in Buffalo, David will be following his Philadelphia Flyers throughout Stanley Cup Playoffs.

I think that it was a pretty impressive win by our club. It looks good to see the orange and black play to their potential. Makes you feel good to be a fan.

So I wasn’t able to sit and watch the game but I saw a lot of it. I loved the give-and-take, the ebb and flow of the play – and that first goal was fantastic.

That Briere, he’s outstanding. You’re paying him a lot, you expect him to be your best player, and he’s paying dividends now. This is playoff time though – the time of year that separates the men from the boys.

That top-shelf first goal, he shot it in a 2-inch diameter hole at speed. That can’t be very easy to do. And what’s more is, he gets chances almost on every second shift. Between you and me, I was hoping he’d get the hat trick.

Once again, Biron was amazing, and those critics who came out and said he’s not a proven No. 1, well, he’s playing some really great hockey right now. And I’m not hearing much out of the ‘experts’ that didn’t think he had it in him.

The shut down of Ovechkin has been impressive; they’re playing as a team, and it’s having its effect. You can see us beginning to capitalize on the opportunities we’re creating for ourselves. Washington is playing like individuals, they’re trying to do too much one-on-one, which is never a good strategy.

Even if you’re a team as talented as the Capitals.

We’re controlling the game, what I liked best about that effort was that the pressure was consistent; we came at them hard, we had a couple bad calls that were sent our way (the penalties are getting out of control), but we managed to bend and not break – and eventually, the pressure and persistence paid off.

The two questions I had coming into this series was whether the D could play well enough to shut down the Caps, and whether Biron would be good enough to beat Huet. Well, after three games (and I know, it’s only been three games), Biron and his defenders have looked sharp. In Game 3, Biron only faced 19 shots, partially because the Philly D blocked a lot of shots.

I have to give it to the D, in the way they’re handling the defensive zone. And what about the way Kapanen was able to pinch in and score – I just love someone like that play the game. Not only is a great D but a great forward as well.

The only scary moments in these series have been, ironically, when we go up two goals and they creep back into it somehow. Then, all of a sudden, they’re only down by one, and they’re pressing. A lot of these games could’ve been far more stressful but like I said, the D and Biron have been as good as advertised, and they’re playing well with what they’re given.

Philly is putting themselves in the right position as a team. I’m not taking away from Washington at all, because Philly is playing a good team game: they’ve been solid defensively, they’ve converted on their scoring chances and in playoff hockey, that’s about all you can expect.

Oh, and Mike Richards? Will somebody please put the ‘C’ on his jerseys right now? Obviously I’m taking nothing away from Smitty, he’s a hell of a player and a great leader, but this is more and more becoming Mike’s team.

So here we are, just over a week removed from playoffs, and we’re right where we want to be. It’s a 2-1 series, and Washington no doubt is feeling pinned.

The thing is, this team, they’re a scary team; they can score at any moment. I want to be done with them already, get finished and get some rest.

But I’m not counting them out, not by a long shot. They win in Philly tonight and they’ll take the home ice back, and we’re back to where we started. I’ve said it a few times now, but that Game 1 was pivotal – there isn’t any reason we shouldn’t be up 3-0 right now.

But we have to take what we have, put it behind us, and look forward to Game 4. And I like what I see. They look strong, Biron has been good, and the D has been solid.

Whatever happens, Philadelphia, and the Flyer faithful, will be rockin’ tonight.

I’ll be watching.

    Double OT!!!

Does the game get better and more nail biting than this? What a game that was last night. The boys looked GREAT. With Carter scoring the first goal with less the a minute into the game and a big scuffle breaking out in the first two minutes—-this is what playoff hockey is all about.!!!! GO FLYERS!!!!

    Couldn't Agree More!!!

Soo happy that the boys took game 4…this was by far the most important game of the series. They really played with heart and everyone from the goalie right up to Richards and Carter gave 120 % last night. I made the 8 hour drve from Toronto ON to Philadelphia, PA to see my boys win in double OT. I think we have this series now and come on Montreal or New York we are ready for you. It is so good to see Mike Richards coming into his own. I remember watching him play Junior for Kitchener and saying man this guy is going to be a good one in the NHL. Nice to see Carter sign as well. He is not going to be the player Mike is, but he can hold his own and thank you for those 2 goals last night. Go Flyer Go!!! I think I need to move to this city..the fans are right up there with the Maple Leaf ones…Although at least we have something to cheer about, not so much for the Toronto fans.

    Wow!

Our boys have this city rockin’! Especially after last night’s 2OT win (I hope you were able to catch it!) I hung out at good ole’ Chickie’s & Pete’s in South Philly for the game. It was nuts! They’re playing so well right now. And we’re in a position that not many people thought we’d be in a few weeks ago.

They’ve done a great job shutting down Ovie-he could have done a lot more damage than a goal and 4 assists. Mike Richards=Cannon. He’s just awesome. And Briere-just wow!

I really think this will be over in Washington on Saturday. The momentum is on our side. The Caps needed that win last night. Honestly, I feel like we were outplayed last night. But we still found a way to win. It took them 2 overtimes, but they did it. That’s the sign of a good team.

    GO FLYERS!

    Briere...and penalties

Thank God, I’m not the only one who thought Briere played a hell of a Game 3, but I agree… the penalties are out of control. Thank you for turning me back onto the sport of hockey, DB. Keep up the great work here on the site and Bones. Congrats on getting signed for a 4th Season of the show. Here’s to hoping the Flyers winning Game 4!

    gotta watch his stick

Yes Daniel has been fantastic, but he’s got to watch his stick! He’s already taken 3 high sticking penalties, one of which cost us the win in game one.

Couldn’t agree more about Mike Richards, his play has been outstanding. To draw and bag that penalty shot had me dancin in the livin room!

quote “Whatever happens, Philadelphia, and the Flyer faithful, will be rockin’ tonight.”

You got that right! Cant wait!! 40 minutes to go!

    Spot On

You make a lot of great points. I was one of the people disappointed in Briere during the season, but he’s shutting me up and I can’t be more happy. The Flyers need him to be their best offensive threat and he’s been just that. As for Biron, he’s been solid. Far better than Huet. And that’s what we needed. And Mike Richards is everything that Flyers fans love; a hard working, skilled and classy player. It’s fun to watch this team when they play their ‘A’ game. It’s just about being consistent now.
