AVERY: Naughty or Nice?

Tuesday November 13, 2007 @ 06:16 PM EST

Sean Avery was summoned to Toronto by NHL VP Colin Campbell on the morning of Tuesday, November 13 to discuss Sean’s pre-game scrum with Darcy Tucker.

Straight from Blueshirt Bulletin:
Now, Avery has to go back to Toronto to face NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell and explain himself. Why do none of the Leafs have to do so? That’s another story altogether—Jason Blake, the one who initiated physical contact, appears to be off the hook completely; likewise Darcy Tucker, who swung his stick at Avery at least twice; and whatever Avery might have said privately, Wade Belak appears to be allowed to announce in public that someone should kill Avery without reprimand.

But it doesn’t end there. Howard Berger of Toronto’s FAN 590 radio reported yesterday that Avery made a comment about Blake’s leukemia, touching off the incident. Avery denied making such a comment and is threatening to sue Berger for libel, according to the Post and News. Berger claims to have heard about this from an unnamed Ranger player. This guy, for those of you who do not know, was one of the first champions of the fraud Eklund, he continues to give the fraud Eklund a radio platform in Toronto, and his FAN 590 blog appears on the fraud Eklund’s site as well - Berger quotes an unnamed Ranger in his blog saying something about Avery, but nothing about what Avery might have said. If it turns out to be true that one of Avery’s teammates ratted him out to Berger - which we find hard to believe, given Berger’s association with an entity known to invent its own news—that could create a whole new sideshow back here in New York.

The Rangers were fined $25,000 and the Maple Leafs $10,000 while Avery was fined the maximum $2,500 and Darcy Tucker $1,000. There were no suspensions.

A statement from Avery:

“I am extremely upset and hurt that false and damaging comments were attributed to me regarding Jason Blake. I made no such comments. I have lost two grandfathers to cancer and have been a consistent contributor to multiple cancer related charities, first and foremost, Hockey Fights Cancer. I am unable to comment further, as the matter is now being addressed by legal counsel.”

What is your opinion on the matter?

    Leaf Bias

There always has been a bias towards the Maple Leafs organization and sadly I believe there always will be.

I think that the fines in this case are appropriate though… Avery has a history of saying things and deserves a larger fine then Tucker. It looks as if the league just multiplied the player fines by 10 for the team fines.

No one will ever know what comments were made by the players unless they formally go out and say themselves what they said. I wouldn’t put it past Avery to make comments about Blake’s cancer but I don’t believe it coming from Howard Berger!!!
I didn’t hear Belak’s comments but if he did say that and didn’t receive a fine, that is absurd!
