The Officiating.

Friday May 16, 2008 @ 11:28 AM EDT

Now I’m not speaking on behalf of the Pens bc they are not the only victims of the horrendous officiating in the NHL. This whole playoffs has been riddled w/ bad refs. I mean for Detroit Holmstrom was not obstructing the goalie. W/ Philly Malkin laid an elbow and did not get called. Dallas…well I don’t care about Dallas. I hope they lose. If anything Holmstrom’s goal in the first game should have been called back. But nonetheless the officiating has changed games in these playoffs. Maybe it’s the old refs adjusting to the new rules or the young refs not knowing the rules but something has to change and change immediately. I don’t want to see a cup final decided by bad officiating.

    Reffing

When I’m playing, or rooting for my favorite team, I’m as bad as anyone complaining about the officiating when it’s not going my way. I was a soccer ref for many years and the truth is that you miss calls. The Holmstrom call might be the obviously worst (though his left skate went into the crease as the shot was winding up). As tight as some refs call hooking now, I have seen other refs arbitrarily blow it off, call it when it doesn’t affect the play and then not call it when a team is up by 3 goals and missed their 4th because of a hook.

    Same here

I think that since the new rules were put in place, the officiating has become worse.
The learning curve is not there for the refs, as it was for the players. They, the refs, still seem to struggle with making the acurate call. Sometimes they let obvious wrongs go unchecked, and other times they jump on the slightest move a player makes that “might” lead to a penalty.
I don’t want the Cup decided by bad officiating, either, but that very well could happen.Let’s hope not.
