Thorsten currently plays wealthy casino owner, Zach Slater, in ABC’s daytime drama, All My Children. For that role, he received a Daytime Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Lead Actor” in 2006. He has also appeared in films, The Silencers, Deadly Desire, and The Bone Collector. An avid rugby and hockey fan, Kaye will chronicle the Detroit Red Wings run to the Stanley Cup.

Some fans have given their favorite Detroit Red Wings moments, and I felt the need to comment on some of them.

First, from RedWingsRule16… When the Wings ended a 42 year drought by sweeping the Flyers. I have to admit, it was one of the most fun and craziest celebrations I have ever been a part of.

When Darren McCarty scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal in 1997 that was a great moment in Red Wings history… the fact that a third-line grinder could make a move like that and score that kind of a goal was so special that I don’t believe I have the words to express it.

I just have to say that I’m glad McCarty is out there this season because he plays tough, he is a good teammate, and he’s a lot smarter than people give him credit for. He makes good, hockey plays whenever he’s on the ice, and I think with each passing day, he’s going to get better and more comfortable

I actually have the newspaper plate from that day, framed with a hockey stick in my studio at home. The “plate” is something that they use to print the papers, and it has a picture of an octopus and a broom on it. I actually got McCarty to sign it.

Next, from drawings… #3 – Stevie Y’s triple-overtime goal against St.Louis. #2 – Steve Yzerman’s retirement night. #1 – Putting the cup on Konstantinov’s lap in the wheelchair after their 2nd cup in 1998.

These are all great moments that bare mentioning, and brings up a point that I hadn’t even considered until now.

If Stevie doesn’t score that goal, there is the possibility that the Wings don’t beat St. Louis, don’t go on to advance to play Colorado in the third round, and the beginning of the Colorado-Detroit rivalry would’ve been pushed back another year or more.

Now, granted, with the talent on each of these teams, it was inevitable that bad blood would arise; good teams who love to win rarely develop a liking for one another – but this just jump-started things and gave us Detroit/Colorado fans many years of enjoyment.

I would’ve been happy to never have had Kris Draper go through the pain of what he went through in Game 6 of that year, but you can’t change the past. It was just fortunate for Kris and for all of us Wings fans that he made a full recovery, and went on to win not only three more Stanley Cups but an Olympic Gold Medal as well. Talk about a warrior to have on your team; the kind of guy you’d be proud to call a friend.

And who could forget Konstantinov? There wasn’t a dry eye on the ice, in the arena, watching at home, or anywhere for that matter when Stevie dropped the Cup on Vladi’s lap almost a year to the day after his tragic accident. Vladimir Konstantinov was a great player, a great teammate, one of the hardest-hitting defensemen the NHL had ever seen, and perhaps most importantly, a great man.

His loss is still felt by all of us in the Red Wings’ nation today.

Vladi, we still believe.

Thank you everyone, for allowing me a few minutes of rolling down DRW memory lane.

    Draper

Kris Draper is tough as nails. For a “little” guy, he is not afraid to get in there and really go after guys. His tenacity is astounding to me!!! Also, I do believe that the Wings swept the Washington Capitals to end the 42 yr drougt, not the Flyers. GO WINGS!!!
