No Forsberg, shaky D...but a win. That's what matters

Friday April 25, 2008 @ 02:23 PM EDT

Thorsten currently plays wealthy casino owner, Zach Slater, in ABC’s daytime drama, All My Children. For that role, he received a Daytime Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Lead Actor” in 2006. He has also appeared in films, The Silencers, Deadly Desire, and The Bone Collector. An avid rugby and hockey fan, Kaye will chronicle the Detroit Red Wings run to the Stanley Cup.

So I was on set during the first part of the game last night, and I had the photographers I was working with updating me on the game. It was 4-1 by the time I got back to my apartment and I saw the highlights of the Wings goals, and I was feeling very confident.

Then, all of a sudden….”What happened?”

Almost immediately after seeing replays of the Wings’ goals, I saw two Avalanche goals and it seemed like the boys were hanging on from then on out. It could’ve easily been 5-4 Avs. The Red Wings have to play defensive and protect a lead better, have to tighten up in their own and pay closer attention to detail.

Now, I know there was lots of talk about the Wings-Avalanche rivalry, but it’s just a couple of the players that were around when that rivalry was at its pinnacle. The series isn’t the same as it used to be, but mark my words it will be gritty and it might come down to depth players like Ian Laperriere, Darren McCarty, or Kris Draper.

If that happens, you’ll know we’re in for one heck of a series!

Now, I’m not one for singling out guys and blaming them but Colorado’s short-side goal was a bad one. Osgood needs to stop those if we want to win this series.

I’m not blaming him because I imagine it’s hard to get back into the swing of the playoffs after you’ve played a tough series like the one against Nashville and have had a few days off.

Especially since the Wings beat the Avs every time they played this season; that usually bodes for a long series for both teams because one team has a lot of pride on the line and doesn’t want to get embarrassed.

And I’m not going to get confident just yet because Forsberg’s absence makes a big difference, and it changes the outlook of the game. He’ll be back as soon as he can, because this guy is a warrior, and you know when he’s back, he’ll be a factor.

Which leads me to something I read online this morning.

What I was reading was Mitch Albom’s column from the Detroit Free Press. Now, if you don’t know Mitch, he’s a bit of a fair-weather fan, because he’s high on the Wings when they win and he’s quick to jump on them when they lose.

He was talking about Forsberg and said something to the effect that Forsberg is something like a chocolate bar – he’s rough on the outside, but mushy in the center. Basically saying that he’s tough, but he keeps falling apart.

I don’t think that analogy is much to begin with, but we’ll leave that alone for now.

Believe me, if Forsberg could play, he would. He’s a warrior, a heart-and-soul guy who always played fair and within the rules, but he played hard and he died to win. And let’s not forget he was Wing killer in his heyday.

He can and will play through pain. I met him at one of the NHL events, and when I shook hands with him I could tell how solid he was. Imagine going into the corner for a loose-puck battle? Give me a break.

But luckily, the Wings were able to hold on, and they take a 1-0 lead into tomorrow’s game. Tomorrow’s game will be a swing-point in this series, I think, and you can bet I’ll be watching from start to finish.

And if Forsberg is in, you’ll see how “mushy” his insides are.

Luckily, we have some boys that can play with him.

Let’s Go Red Wings!

    My mom's a big fan

of All My Children, but I told her you were a Wings fan and she was so dissappointed. The Avs have a lot to look forward to next season, so we’ll be seeing you again then, and see what we make of it on a more even playing field (since the Wings NEVER faced a healthy Avs team this year) . . . . I hope my Stars make it to the next round, I’d love to see them polish the Wings off.

    TK

Dude, there was no doubt about it in GAME 2. Avas were buried fro the first puck drop to the last horn. AWESOME game by the Red Wings. They need to do that same thing in the Ass Can in Denver and bring this series to a close early.

    Kicking it up a notch!

I didn’t see the game the other night but I caught some highlights of it after seeing how fast the score had changed, and I had that same “sucker-punched” feeing as inkling did. I was happy to see the Wings a much more together and centered unit today. I’m excited about this series because it’s really gone to another level from the quarterfinals, I mean the play itself has.
Love your comments TK and can’t wait for some on this game. Your boy Franzen was on FIRE today, wasn’t he? And I loved that WE scored during THEIR power play! (yes, there’s a little kid inside me going, “naa, naa, na-na-na!”
    GO RED WINGS!!!!!!!
OH I almost forgot – the little kid inside me also enjoyed that moment today when karma caught Laperriere in the face; I was thinking about him hitting Lidstrom during the regular season, that kept him out a few games, didn’t it? So I didn’t feel bad about that little punch in Laperriere’s face AT ALL. (Does this make me a bad person?)

    Wings lead series 2-0!!

As always, I look forward to reading your well thought out comments on our favorite team. I totally agree with your assessment of game 1. I was feeling pretty confident a few minutes into the 2nd period when they scored their 4th goal. Then I felt like I got sucker-punched. Fortunately, the guys decided they didn’t want a repeat of that performance today! GO WINGS!!!!!

    Nervous-making

Hey, you weren’t the only one at work last night but you got home a lot earlier! I had to make do with the play by play online. Those two Av goals wham-bam really made me nervous. I think the Wings need to get a lot more aggressive when they’re in the lead and not just sit back and let it get out from under them. And you’re right about Forsberg, he gets back in it, it’s gonna be a whole different series.
I’ll definitely be watching tomorrow afternoon!
Loved your Red Wings shirt hanging over the headboard today! Zach loves him some Red wings. And I love me some Zach!
You totally knocked yesterday’s and today’s scenes right out of the park.
    Go Red Wings!

    This

is going to a great series, Ozzy needs to stay focused and shut them out. We need to play a 60 minute game at some point. When that happens watch out. LETS GO RED WINGS !!!!

    5-4 Avs eh?

Well I know you were on set during the first period, but the game could have easily been 6 or 7 to nothing at that point. The Avs had a solid 2nd period, but the Wings responded with a good 3rd, albeight I hate it when they fall into their defensive scheme when they are up. So realistically it should have been 7-5, but thats why they play the game!

    looking forward to game 2!

I will totally agree with you about Forsberg, this guy is a TRUE warrior! He really plays a type of game that alot of Europeans don’t, He is in the corners every game and won’t stop until he comes out with the puck! The unfortunate realization about that style however is no matter how tough or solid you are you will be broken down ALOT faster then guys who just sit back and wait for the puck to get fed to them. That is just a given. But I hope for the sake of the series his groin can heal and he can come back in time. Now I didn’t watch a whole lot of the game last night I was more involved with the Montreal/Philly game. But the Aves did a great job at comming back (even if the Wings did start to play too conservative) Because when you look at the scoreboard and see you are down by 3 goals with time against you that can really get into a players psyche. But I guess when you are programed to do nothing but win and your competing at the highest level you have no choice but to come through like that! Budaj was great after stepping in for Theodore, and to be honest even though Osgood did let a somewhat soft one in he made up for it big time in the thrid period! The O man just simply ended up showing up when the Wings needed him the most! And that final save he made in the dying seconds of the hockey game was solid! He slid out just enough to challange the shooter and take enough of the shot away from him. And honestly who is wishing that they had chosen Mr. Franzen for there hockey pool? I sure know I could use him lol that tip in goal was a beauty…Great eye! Kronwall continues to play solid and keeps comming out of these games with highlight hits, which is great he is firing up his team the best way he knows how! I don’t know if any of you would agree with my outlook of game one but it was an interesting start as far as the start of a series could go!

    Basically

The Wings didn’t go for the “kill” when Colorado switched netminders.Instead of pressing the attack and peppering a cold goalie with pucks, they went into cruise control.Teams always try to up the ante when they have to change goalies.Instead of smacking them down with a reraise the Wings folded the hand. They let Colorado back in it by sitting on the lead.I don’t think it was a bad goal by Osgood. He played it right.Came out, took away the angles. The puck had eyes.A quarter inch to left and it was off the post and out, instead of off and in.Had the Wings kept the same level of intensity that gave them the lead in the first place through out the game the score and the story would be quite different.
