Before the Avs, a Nashville retrospective
Wednesday April 23, 2008 @ 02:48 PM EDT

Thorsten currently plays wealthy casino owner, Zach Slater, in ABC’s daytime drama, All My Children. For that role, he received a Daytime Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Lead Actor” in 2006. He has also appeared in films, The Silencers, Deadly Desire, and The Bone Collector. An avid rugby and hockey fan, Kaye will chronicle the Detroit Red Wings run to the Stanley Cup.
Wings/Avs.
I couldn’t be happier.
But before I get into the rivalry, what it means, and my own take on what to look for in Round 2, I have to first give credit to the boys for making it this far and again, credit to Nashville for the will they showed in this series.
As a matter of fact, I almost missed the game. I went so far as to cancel a flight with Northwest to be sure I could see the game, and after all that I’m on the phone screaming at DirectTV because I couldn’t find the game on TV… so I’m sitting in the middle of nowhere in the woods, calling these guys, trying to find the game, but because there was a golf tournament, and the Pope, MSG was carrying the game here in CT on MSG+.
When it didn’t start right away at 3:00, I got pretty heated.
Now, the Pope I understand. And if the Pope needs NBC, who am I to complain? God is a Red Wings fan anyway, as everybody knows, so I knew he wouldn’t do this to us.
Eventually, everything worked out and I was able to catch the game, and I guess I owe an apology to DirectTV, but this is playoff hockey. Emotions run high.
But to the game…
The first period was the big one and my hat is off to Chris Osgood. I’m so impressed by him. I’m sure it was a tough call, and we talked about it last week, but I really felt like you had to go with Osgood after Hasek’s play and it looks like it panned out.
I don’t know what’s going on with Hasek. Those were some soft ones he let in.
As the game wore on, I had to send the family into another room; I was too nervous to be around anyone. It’s amazing because here I am, sitting and watching the game, nervous as hell and you look and you can almost feel the calmness of Lidstrom and Rafalski, even Kronwall (who has been great) and Chelios, and their calmness almost makes you feel more confident. It must be something else to be on the ice with them.
That calmness came out in their interviews as well. And whenever they talk to coaches, as they do sometimes during the games (don’t get me started on that), I’m always impressed that the coach compliments the other team. In no other sport does the coach make a point to do that as routinely as in hockey.
Something else that is unique to hockey is one of my favorite acts in all of sports: the post-series handshake.
My daughter, who is 5, came in before the game was over (right when Hudler had that beautiful goal), and she stuck with me to watch. And I try to imagine what it must look like to her: I mean, she sees the fights, the hits, and you try to explain to her what they’re doing and why, that they all like one another, they have a tremendous respect for one another, but that they have to compete to win.
So then, they start shaking hands and talking to one another, hugging one another and she just watched. She’d never seen that before, so we talked about hockey players, how they’re so different, and needless to say, she was very impressed.
Watching that handshake, seeing the tradition also got me thinking about some other moments that made my hair stand on end. Without getting too sentimental about it, here are my top three hockey and, yes, Detroit Red Wings moments of my lifetime.
3. Champions the Third: As far as memories, go, it’s hard to beat the ones you actually experienced. Well, I was there in ’02 when the Wings won the Cup. At the time, it was probably my greatest sports experience, not just in hockey. I was in the arena, it me and my brother Patrick, which made it great as well. My favorite part was each guy grabbing the cup and doing his lap with it. That was incredible.
2. March 26, 1997. That date alone should be legendary in the Red Wings archives. The big game where Lemieux finally got his ass kicked, when McCarty got him. The game where Roy came out and he fought Vernon. The game where Larionov and Forsberg, two of the least likely guys you’d expect to start a brawl, started a brawl. What’s more, I think they had lost every meeting with the Avs that year, and from the playoffs the year before, you knew it was coming. Hockey players have long memories. And not that you need to fight to have a game remembered, but McCarty stepped up, the team stepped up and protected one of their own, and to cap it all off, then they won it in OT; and who else? Darren McCarty slammed it in. I was watching it on TV. I was in California by myself, and I didn’t think it was going to be a game like that. I thought, “Here we go again,” but you could see when that game started it was a little more intense, and obviously, that’s how it ended as well.
1. Curtain Call But my No. 1 Detroit moment is another when I was actually there. It was, of course, the Yzerman retirement night. It sends shivers up and down my spine even now when I think about it. My hair was standing up. I’ve been in the entertainment business a long time and I’ve seen a lot of great performances, but I have never heard a longer standing ovation for anyone in my life. Whenever he wanted to talk, it started up again. I just remember sitting there thinking, “That is what class looks like. That is a captain.” And now, I’m so glad he’s still with the organization. My hat is off to the Illitches – they did such a great job with that ceremony. Everyone in attendance, we got this cool thing, it’s a little banner and it had all his stats from all the years he played. There was a great program, as well, and it was such a great evening, made better by the fact that we went out and won the game.
So anyway, thank you for humoring me. If you have your own top-3 list, I’d love to hear about it so post to the bottom of the page and we’ll see which are the consensus picks.
Like I said, I’ll come up with a blog on the Avs before we play Game 1, a little later this week, because I wanted first to finish off the Nashville series properly.
This was a tough one for us – we have a good record against all Western teams except the Central Division, so it was good to get that out of the way early.
We dealt with probably the scrappiest bunch in the playoffs as well. It’s a classy organization they have over there, a great hockey city, with a lot of good young players, some great veterans, and one heck of a goaltender.
My hat is off to you, Nashville.
My gloves are off to you, Colorado.
Kidding – maybe.
Round 2. Upcoming.

Direct TV
Reading how you reacted to not being able to find the Wings game, made me laugh because I did the same thing. Only, I didn’t go as far as calling Direct TV. I was over in Grand Rapids Mi, at my aunts house, who has Direct tv, and I sat in her living room yelling at their tv flipping through all the stations that said they were brodcasting the game, but either had the Pope or Golf on. Lucky for my family, the game came on.

Favorite moments
I’m not a longtime serious Wings lover, that’s a fairly recent development, but have always loved the game. The 1998 win reduced me to tears (I can’t be the only one, can I?) Yzerman is SUCH a class act. My Detroit love has developed over the last several years mostly from them having a wonderful team with wonderful fans, and if you love old-school Motown music and old cars, how can you go wrong?
Kidwingsfan, you and the others who are not responding to Kathy warm the cockles of my cynical heart. Thorsten doesn’t need fans like her, he has enough like us who love him to pieces. I mean, what do you expect from someone who doesn’t know Claude from Mario? Claude deserved what he got (definitely a favorite moment!)

HAHA OH Kathy...
Before you start talking please understand what it is you are talking about…He was not talking about Mario Lemiuex, he was talking about CLAUDE LEMIUEX! And if you had seen that series back in 96 where “CLAUDE” Lemiuex viciously hit Kris Draper from behind face first into the boards I am sure you would agree with Thorsten about why it was soo great to see this cheap shot artist finally get what was comming to him! Hockey is a game about respect and if someone crosses that line then that’s when it becomes the DUTY of the enforcer to set them straight and to let them know this will not be tolerated! It’s clear to me that you really don’t understand the physical aspects of the game making you no better than the ppl who want to lable hockey as a “blood sport” And the fact that you would be as arrogant as to say “I should say I used to be a fan of yours.” over a small indifference like that just goes to show how up tight and how small a person you really are… Get over yourself and grow up! Not everyone see’s eye to eye on everything and nor should they have to without being labled as “wrong” or as being “bad” for thinking a different way then yourself. I am about as nice a guy there is but when I read stuff like that BOY it gets me heated lol, anyways have a good day everyone that goes for you too Kathy

My Top 3 Moments
Thorsten, I first must say that I always look forward to your blogs because you truly are a hockey fan that is passionate about not only the game but the Detroit Red Wings. Before I get into my fav 3 Red Wing moments in history, I am going to have to correct Kathy who posted a comment below. I must correct what I think is a horrible misunderstanding…First of all, Thorsten was not referring to Mario Lemiuex, but CLAUDE Lemiuex who is by far not the best player to ever to play the game. He is an instigator and he plays dirty…what he had coming he rightfully deserved. Fighting does not give hockey a bad name. Especially on the Wings who by nature are traditionally not an aggressive team. When you see a fight it is about defending a teammate or protecting your goalie. One player I have come to appreciate is Aaron Downey. What I love about the guy is that he never instigates or accepts a fight if there is not reasoning behind it. In fact, this past regular season game against Colorado, Laperriere went after Nicklas Lidstrom with a hit that left him sidelined for a few games. Not only did Downey make him pay for it, but he also had this to say after the game, “”When the elbows are up, when you hit the five-time Norris winner, arguably one of the best defensemen ever to play the game, it’s a joke,” said Downey of the hit. “So my message is simple: The next time anyone runs any of our guys in a way that it shouldn’t be done … the same thing is going to happen again. Fair justice is fair justice.”
My top 3 Red Wing moments…1. When the Wings ended a 42 year drought by sweeping the Flyers. I have to admit, it was one of the most fun and craziest celebrations I have ever been a part of. 2. Tied here is the March 26, 1997 game which I believe was the turning point for the Wings which gave them the boost to go on and win the Stanley Cup. And also Stevie Y’s retirement ceremony. It was definitely very well put together and a very moving ceremony. Stevie is one of the nicest guys I have ever met. 3. When Stevie skated the cup over to Vladi after sweeping the Capitals.

Sorry Kathy
I have to disagree with you about “that’s what gives hockey a bad name”. I think that game, the “fight” is what makes hockey so great. They stood up for their team mate. No other sport would do somthing like that. there is no sport that has the camaraderie that hockey does. I do understand (somewhat) your point of fighting. I agree that when you fight just to fight it isn’t good for the sport or fans. and I enjoy the fights, but we don’t need it in the sport to sell the sport. and don’t get me started on Lemieux being one of the best to ever play the game. LOL
Go Wings!

Top 3 Moments
As a die hard Wings fan for 23 years it is soooo hard to narrow it down to 3 moments but here goes. #3-Stevie Y’s triple overgoal against St.Louis, #2-Steve Yzerman’s retirement night, #1-Putting the cup on Konstantinov’s lap in the wheelchair after their 2nd cup in 1998. That game on March 26, 97 when Lemieux finally got what was coming to him was probably one of my favorite games of all time, and of course all 3 cups (In my lifetime) It’s great to be a fan of a team that year after year provides us with “new” great and memorable moments. GO WINGS!!!!

Good Hockey
I am a fan of good hockey. I have enjoyed watching Detroit and other teams play, because good hockey is exciting to watch. I have also been a fan of yours over the years as I have watched the different shows that you have been on. However, I take exception to the comment about your comment, ”...the big game where Lemieux finally got his ass kicked.” That comment just reinforces what gives hockey a bad name. He is only one of the greatest players to ever play the game, soon to be followed by another one of the potentially greatest players who will play the game—Sidney Crosby. Oh, yeah, and they both just happen to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
I should say I used to be a fan of yours.

No Moments Yet
Since I’m new to hockey, I don’t have three favorite moments – yet! So, if you don’t mind – I’ll share yours. Did have a good time at work today impressing some co-workers with my new found “knowledge” of hockey.
And, I won’t laugh AT you in regard to the Direct-TV incident – but, NOW you know how we – your audience felt/feels when Patrick, Ian, or Zach were/are pre-empted.

My favorite Red Wings moment??
Any and all games that Gordie played in.
