Looking sharp early
Friday April 11, 2008 @ 06:47 PM EDT

Thorsten currently plays wealthy casino owner, Zach Slater, in ABC’s daytime drama, All My Children. For that role, he received a Daytime Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Lead Actor” in 2006. He has also appeared in films, The Silencers, Deadly Desire, and The Bone Collector. An avid rugby and hockey fan, Kaye will chronicle the Detroit Red Wings run to the Stanley Cup.
In playoffs, it’s always one game at a time.
Well…one down, fifteen more to go.
The boys looked great coming out of the gate last night. Even though I was working, shooting a scene with my friend Cameron Mathison, and one of the execs happened to be on set and we got him to push the Versus feed down to where we could see it. So we were filming, but between takes, we got to see the scores and the replays.
Believe me; I won’t miss this time of year for anything. As a matter of fact, I’ve watched all the games, every one of them. I’ve had to flip back-and-forth between a couple, but I haven’t missed seeing at least part of every single game. My family isn’t exactly loving me right now, but I can’t help it. This is by far the best time of year.
But before anything else, I want to say something about Brendan Shanahan.
I’m going to be so sorry when Shanny hangs them up. I hope he will stay in the game, to coach, to manage, whatever – because he’s such a classy guy, and he showed it a couple nights ago.
When he got that breakaway, when he passed up career playoff goal number 60, I was saying to myself: “I can’t believe he just did that.” He has an empty net, he has earned the right to score if he wants, he is one goal away from 60 for his playoff career, and he passed it to Nigel Dawes, a rookie.
That’s Shanny for you. I’ll be honest, I miss him in Detroit. He’s one of those guys I was talking about in my last blog, one of those good blue-collar athletes you can be proud to call him a friend. You just don’t see things like that in sports anymore, and it was a perfect example of what I was talking about.
Hockey players are the best sort of athletes.
Heck, they’re the best sort of people.
But back to the playoffs: the Ducks came out like the class bully last night, the kind that figures they’re bigger and stronger than everyone else, but Dallas came right back at them and showed them why they won’t be able to push them around. Four powerplay goals! That’ll teach the Ducks a little control, I think.
Watching that game, I realized that I like the Stars as a hockey club. They’re not my favorites, of course, but Hull is one of my favorite players of all time, and I’m glad he’s still associated with them. He’s doing what I hope Shanny will do when he is finished, stay in the game in some capacity.
Which brings me back a full circle: to the Red Wings. Like I said, they got off to a good start, and their guys coming off of injury looked good. Cleary looked great, Drapes looked sharp, and Stuart, for all the time he’s missed good with a broken finger he looked sharp as well.
I’ll tell you, I’m trying not to get overexcited, but I can’t help it. I am excited.
One thing – and this is the tiniest of criticisms – but Datsyuk has to shoot more. He’s so confident with his puck handling ability, and he always wants the pretty goal, but I want to see him firing pucks on net whenever he has the chance.
And to give credit where it is due, I have to say Ellis played a great game. That game could’ve been done really early, there were some great chances by the Red Wings. He stoned Zetterberg once, and Samuelsson, who looked good as well, once or twice.
Finally, Franzen was solid, and I guess that should be expected. At first, it seemed like he got points just by playing with Datsyuk and Zetterberg, but he’s looking good on his own, better every night. He’s so big and strong, he can really skate, and he can handle the puck – he almost does what he wants out there.
At the risk of getting too excited for this team, I have to say they looked ready, and they haven’t looked that ready since 2002 perhaps.
We’ll see what happens in Game 2.
Rememer, one game at a time.
Until next time.

One game @ a time...
I have to agree w/ your one @ a time philosophy. Now that our Preds are back in this thing we will even up the series tonight!!! I know your dead things are just trying to get out of these quarters without getting too banged up, but they had better not underestimate the resiliency and passion of this years Predators. We may not be pretty, but we have resolve. Last season we had TOO much starpower and not enough grind. This season? I think we have proven the naysayers wrong already by just making the playoffs-and we all know anything can happen in the playoffs.
P.S.- I thought Tootoo broke chelios’ hip last game. Keep drinking your Ensure and taking your metamucil cheli!!!!

My mellow is officially harshed
Well, today wasn’t a TOTAL loss, with a very Emmy-worthy performance from you and your acting partner! With more to come throughout this week, I’m sure. But what happened to our Wings?? Yikes!! They ran out of steam or something. Like LS, I hope to see them seriously kick butt on Wednesday night. Hopefully they’ll do their job as well as you do yours!

Now I'm bummed
Two goals in 9 seconds… how the heck does that happen? How common is that? The last game they scored two in 11 seconds; this game they get two in 9. Am I the only one who thinks this defies logic? Well at least I’m glad that Datsyuk got a goal and for awhile it seemed like it was going to be enough. I’m expecting the Wings to come back on Wednesday and kick some butt!
P.S. I do not have the words to adequately express how grateful I am for the brilliant performance you graced us with on today’s show. I agree with madmommie—simply said, Mr. Kaye you are THE BEST, and we are all so lucky to be able to witness the excellence you exude in your craft.

Are you going to make me a RedWings fan, too?
When I lived in Buffalo, three players on the Sabres lived on our street, we bought the house of a hockey player who was traded to Chicago, and my son’s best friend’s dad was a retired player who worked for the front office. We didn’t have much choice but to follow the game… but there is no hockey in Kansas. So I don’t follow hockey anymore… never followed the RedWings… but, hey, I love your acting.

Toast - you're jammin'!
Glad to see you blogging, TK! Keep up the great work. The show today ROCKED the house, by the way – you broke my heart from the first moment and kept crumbling it for an hour.
Thumbs up all the way, and may your beloved RedWings take it all the way this year!

Wheels keep on turning...
Wow, that sure was an exciting game. I must confess, however, that Dom made me a little nervous for a few minutes in the second period. After the time out (great call) things got back on track and I was back to having fun. As for luck – sure maybe luck had a little do it, but not nearly as much as superior depth and SKILL (JMO).
So, I’m wondering which carries the greater weight: the momentum of winning the first two games or going to play in their house? I saw Zetterberg’s “the Cup changes everything” piece where he talked about not only having to face the opposing team but also the fans in the stands. How much does that mess with the players’ minds?

What's the deal indeed?
Herb, thanks for bringing this up because it pissed me off too, when I read it. And “Drapes hit a skate”, wah wah, well stuff happens, ya know? Loved your comments and totally agree with you. Our blogger DOES know his stuff and I’ll be curious to see what he has to say about that game. Thanks to you and thanks to him!

Whats the deal!?
Whats the deal!?
Game 2 last night, headline’s are “Lucky Detroit City” & “Wings get breaks”. How do they figure? Nashville’s guy was literally in our net, behind our goalie when the puck went in. If that’s not enough to call it no goal, then you could argue the fact that the net was pretty much off the hinges anyway. And if you don’t want to accept either of those; how about the call on the ice when the whistle had already been blown, signaling the play DEAD (the real reason it was no goal). A response could be “but we also hit two goal posts”. True, but any hockey fan and or smart person knows that another inch to the right or left you would have missed the net completely. Nashville was forced to hit the post because Hasek was on last night; his positioning was so good that he gave Nashville nothing to shoot at. Only until he went around the net to retrieve the puck did they score and that’s because the puck hit something in the boards. TALK ABOUT LUCK! And ya sure, Drapes hit a skate and it went in. Good break true, but we also had three other justifiable goals. We did win 4-2. So how about we say we won 3-1. Since that’s how many legitimate goals were scored. But look who STILL has a two goal lead over the other. It was a good game, winning is winning.
I’m glad you’re covering Detroit. It you seem to really know your stuff! Thanks man.

Great blog!
I think it’s absolutely wonderful that you get so excited this time of year. Hopefully you can get back home for some of the Wings’ playoff games. Hockeytown Fever from an old gal who was born and raised in Detroit.
