Leafs down, Marlies out … but Ron Wilson brings us hope.

So the Marlies did a valiant job of restoring some dignity to Leafs nation by getting to the Conference Finals in the AHL Playoffs, only to be whaled on by a far superior Chicago Wolves team (damn you Jason Krog!). As it turns out, half of the Marlies team turned out for the Leafs this season. In theory the future looks bright for Toronto, right?
Well … not exactly.
If you’ve not been inside the bubble that is Leafs Nation, you will have probably come across the fact that they are in trouble. Serious trouble.
As a team who traditionally doesn’t draft well, nor trades well and is a franchise who tends to throw away draft picks for veterans: it seems that the Leafs can do no right. It is a general consensus that if they stopped making money on condominiums and concentrated on hockey, the Leafs wouldn’t be in as big a hole.
And with a string of boneheaded trades (Raask for Raycroft, Boyes for Nolan etc …) and several playoff-less seasons, all seems lost in the eyes of the fans.
Until today.
The finest man that is available has signed on the dotted line.
Ron Wilson is the new Leafs Head Coach.
A man who is synonymous with winning throughout his career and is no stranger to the Leafs organisation has come home to sort out Canada’s struggling team. His uncanny ability to turn around ‘loser-teams’ into ‘Stanley Cup contenders’ has been more than well documented.
And he’s already let it known that he will rule Leafland with an iron fist, taking no prisoners and announcing that the core of the team will change.
Will he buy out all those lucrative contracts and cut the dead weight?
Will he be the one that ultimately ends Mats Sundin’s Toronto tenure?
And will he ever bring home the Stanley Cup that the fans have yearned for almost half a century?
I honestly don’t know but I’m excited that he’s here.
Welcome back to Leafs Nation: Ron Wilson!

Best of luck ..
.. to Ron and the Leafs next season. I think most Sharks fans feel the same way. Ron did great things down here but he and the Sharks seem to have gone as far as they could with that relationship. I hope McLellean can come in and shake things up – get the Sharks playing up to their potential.

i hope
wilson is able to turn the leafs around. i think he’s a great coach, and maybe his kick-you-in-the-ass attitude and coaching style is just what the players and the organization need to shoot up to the top of the heap.

well
I wouldent get my hopes up soon because a coach can only use what he has at his dispossal, if management made decent trades maybe the Leafs wouldent be in a big hole. The Toskala trade was a waste because they traded draft picks and already had a starting goaltender now the Leafs have a 2 million dollar goalie sitting on the bench. That could of been used for a new player, but as we know the Leafs management is poor and thats why they are in a huge hole. Hopefully Cliff Fletcher will steer the club in the right direction and the Leafs may bring home the Stanley Cup in the future.

they have drafted good ppl over the years
Kenny Jonsson was a top defender for years,Jason Smith, and the ones you mentioned, but they trade those gems away and thats the problem they have, I hope Fletcher cleans up a little letting the younger guys a chance to play especially on defense, several years ago I thought it would happen, they had Kaberle and McCabe, the rest young guys, then they signed Kubina and Gill(What a waste although Kubina may be traded soon)hopefully for the(well I lost count) lets just say I hope they stick to the plan, I don’t mind missing the playoffs for a few years if it means a team that will dominate for years,a last place finish next year means a John Tavares first overall pick, whoever lands that guy will have a guy some ppl now say will be the next Gretzky and better than Crosby.I’m sure Ron will add structure and help turn the team around for the better

well
Hopefully Ron can bring your guys a new lease on the future and maybe some good drafting this year. I dunno who gave this blog a ‘1’, but I tried to even it out. Probably a bitter Sharks fan.

Now all he needs is a decent management
He wont be in control of the trades, at least not entirely and that is what Toronto really speciallise in screwing up. I’d like to see the Leafs can all bar Tucker of the veterans and build the team from the ground up with a low salary to give some cap space, they really need to draft a good goalie like McCollum or Pickard, somebody to build the team around

well...
this answers my Ron Wilson question! (lol) He did an excellent job with the Sharks this season and should be able to help the Leafs out— somewhat. I see all this heat has given you the blog inspirational!!
