    No.1 seed

for the Stars… sweet! Tough, tough bracket though. Thanks for the invite—I will check in whenever possible. Prediction: Nieuwendyk will win at least two games in OT.

    Craigy

Tony would be honored…we should photoshop a picture of a trophy with Tony on it, mullet flapping and all. Hey can you do me a solid and “simulate” Tony Amonte onto one of the Sim Teams? Good group man! Props!

    Opening Ceremonies

So, welcome to the first ever “Tony Amonte Memorial Cup”.

Where does this come from? Well, for those readers of my blogs, it was inspired by a series I did called “Craig’s SimCup”. There is this wonderfully fun thing on the NHL.com website (under the History section) that is linked to the WhatifSports website, which allows you to simulate hockey games between any teams in NHL history. So after playing with it a bit, I got a little obsessed and came up with the SimCup. I felt that some people got a little kick out of it, so I got a little more ambitious and decided to make a more elaborate and fun tournament. Which leads us to now…

And so I came up with the this. I picked out 16 teams from each conference and looked for an appropriate team from each franchise to represent it. The team years span from the 1970 Boston Bruins to the 2007 Anaheim Ducks. If a team had won a (post-expansion) cup, then that was the year I used, if not, then I just took a year where maybe they went to the finals, or had a franchise year, or just didn’t suck that much.

For the West, I counted the 1993 Toronto Maple Leafs over there, and added the Winnipeg Jets, but did not include the Columbus Blue Jackets, both due to accidentally missing them and them not really having a suitably strong team (maybe after this years are up, they’ll be in the running).

In the East, with the subtraction of the Leafs, I was able to add the Hartford Whalers and Quebec Nordiques.

The 32 teams started off with a round robin, to determine the standings for the match ups for the elimination rounds. Each team will play the other 15 teams in their conference twice, once at home and away, for a total of 30 games. Since this was a lot of games, I merely simulated and recorded, so I will only be doing a sum up of each team’s round robin play before they start. I will be posting the standings separately.

The elimination round will be very much like the Stanley Cup playoffs, but since I want as much action as possible, no teams will be out after round robin play, so instead of 4 rounds and 16 wins to take the cup, there will be a much harder 5 rounds and 20 wins. Now by having more teams, it will leave it open for anybody to win, and though a 16 seed team could end up beating out a 1st seed, if they manage to make it through 4 rounds (and thus 4 higher seeds, including another 1st seed) to get there, they I think they deserve it.

So with these ‘Opening Ceremonies’, I will be posting the round robin results and standings and leading scorers, as well as the playoff brackets.

I will choose series run through and do it in a similar, but more detailed way that I did before. For example, I am going to start with the #7 and #10 seeds of the Eastern Conference, the 1994 New York Rangers and the 1991 Pittsburgh Penguins respectively. I think this will be a fun and dynamic series that will set a good pace for the opening round. I’m going to do a little research and give us a little history lesson too with each series, starting off with a detailed team profile for each team as it is there turn. I’ll go over what exactly happened with that team in their year and how they did and then I’ll go over their round robin play and key players. Then I’ll run through the series and move onto the next one.

Now I’ve come to realize that I cannot give myself arbitrary deadlines and schedules for this sort of thing, and so I’m not going to do like a “one series a week” thing or anything like that. I could do a couple a day, or a week, or a month, pretty much whenever I feel like doing it, but I’ll try and keep it interesting and keep you guys reading.

And so lastly, I just wanted to say that I love any sort of feedback, just anything to let me know that you guys are actually enjoying this. I have a ton of fun doing this stuff, but I want to know if you guys like it as much. So any sort of comments on what you like and don’t, cheering for you favourite teams and classic players, and making predictions for who you think will win each series and the whole thing. So have fun, and make sure you join this group so you can stay posted.

And I almost forgot, you may be wondering about the name I chose for the cup. I wanted to name it after a player or something like that, and so with all of the popularity of Laur’s campaign to find Amonte, I thought what more perfect guy to name my trophy after for the NHL Connect people.
