    Now We're Seeing Some Movement

So, I know that expectations are high for the Sharks, but it seems like those expectations are starting to be met. I really like what I’m hearing from the coaches, the players and management. They’re not trying to make major changes, they’re just tweaking things here and there. They know that things are going to start clicking. I’m glad we have level headed people in this organization. Keeping an even keel is more important than knee jerk moves. Look at Dallas. They fire their GM and all of a sudden the team starts playing great??? What the heck did the GM have to do with how the team plays. I guess you could make a point that the GM was restricting the coach’s ability to run the team the way he wanted to, but I don’t think this is going to continue to have a big impact on Dallas. It gave them a reason to step up their game. As soon as they forget about that, they’ll be back where they belong (no offense), in third place.
I like that the Sharks are starting to battle through games. Last night in Dallas, they looked like they were starting to run out of steam in the third, but they reached down and found that extra something they’ve been lacking for a while and grabbed a win! I think it’s a very telling statistic that in our last 10 games, we’ve only lost one in regulation. Points in 9 out of 10 games is an accomplishment in itself, even if it does include a few shootout losses.

Two Wins in a Row...Did We Pull Out of It?

It’s been great to see the Sharks go on a feeding frenzy the past two games. These are games the Sharks SHOULD win, and so while I’m happy with the results, I don’t know that the Sharks have pulled out of the lackluster play bog they’ve been in the first quarter of the season. How do you judge things when they’re playing a team that, no offense to the ‘Yotes, simply isn’t at the same level as the Sharks. These should be wins for the Sharks and I’m glad they are. The game against Dallas on Wednesday…that will show if there is progress. The Sharks should be beating the Stars. They are a much better team in almost every area of measurement. Maybe the taste of success provided at the expense of the ‘Yotes will motivate the team to put forth the required effort to start playing at the next level.
One interesting note: Did anyone see the expression on Jonathan Cheechoo’s face after he assisted on Setoguchi’s second goal? It almost looked like he was jealous or annoyed that this rookie is burrying pucks while Jonathan himself is struggling. For the record, I never thought Cheechoo was a great player. He’s a sniper that takes advantage of other teams when they don’t pay attention to him. He used to play loose too…much more creative. I think he’s expecting too much out of himself. That 56 goal season was the worst thing that ever happened to him. I love him, but we’ve go to be realistic about him.

Sharks Can't Beat the Depleted Ducks...

...So how will they EVER beat the enhanced version. And they WILL be enhanced soon. You can bet that before the Ducks get to the all star break, Both Scott Neidermier and Teemu Selanne will be back on the ice. Both would like to win another cup. Both have had all the rest they need. But most important of all…if they come back now and the Ducks are suddenly unstoppable again, who are the heroes?
So since the Ducks will soon be better than they are now…what can the Sharks do to have a chance to beat them? Well, Chris Kunitz (listed at 5-11, 195) was hitting everything teal last night, including our juggernaut, Douglas Murray. Did we have anyone doing that on the teal side? No. We seriously need to get tougher, hungrier, more tenacious…whatever you want to call it. I saw guys last night ducking out of hits, avoiding contact, skating around high traffic areas instead of fighting for the puck. If that doesn’t change, you can kiss the cup goodbye because no team has ever won the cup with that kind of effort. Who can cause the needed change? Ron Wilson? Patrick Marleau? I honestly don’t know. I have a theory though… Maybe the Sharks are all just waiting for the postseason to show up. Maybe they all know how meaningless the regular season is come playoff time (assuming you actually MAKE the playoffs). Maybe they just can’t seem to get themselves going until there is really something on the line again. You know when you’re playing a video game and you get to a really hard part and lose, then you have to go through all the easy stuff again just to get back to the part you lost on? There’s not a lot of motivation to try to do real well on the early stuff any more because all you care about is beating that hard part. Well, if the Sharks don’t start showing more of the type of game they had against Dallas, the only hard part they’ll get to is the one where they realize the playoffs are out of reach and they’ve got to go through all that boring easy stuff again in order to get back to the real hard part.

    A Promissing Loss?

So on a night when the Sharks decided to show up for 3 full periods, unfortunately Nabokov didn’t get the memo.
The Sharks played arguably their most solid game of the season last night and still wound up with a 3-1 loss. The sad thing is that they dominated most of the game. There were very few sustained Dallas attacks. The three Dallas goals came on: 1) A slapshot from a somewhat bad angle and far enough away that Nabokov should have stopped it. 2) A botched breakaway that looked like slow motion as it dribbled it’s way through Nabokov’s gorge of a 5 hole. Did I mention that it was shorthanded? 3) A fourth line spare checker in Steve Ott, who scores goals at a clip of about 1 a season, is smart enough to remember the huge 5 hole Nabby’s giving up and just directs the puck in that general direction.
I’m not saying the Sharks didn’t make mistakes. Certainly, the two breakaway goals were defensive lapses.
But I felt really good the whole game. The Sharks were creative and entertaining. They had energy and they never quit. I’ll take that loss. If the Sharks keep playing like that, they’ll win most of those games. Chalk this one up to bad luck. Yes, Turco played well, but I think the puck just hit him a lot of times where it could have just as easily found the back of the net.
I hope Ron Wilson and the rest of the Sharks coaches realize the improvement that was shown last night. If they do, then they can focus on shoring up the mistakes and telling Nabokov that the team has decided to show up for 60 minutes. If he shows up too…wins are in the future.

    Sharks get Revenge 3-1

I didn’t see the game…wait, nobody saw it unless they were there. But, sounds like our D got a bit more responsible. I like some of the things I heard on the radio by Dan R. He said the Sharks’ players are encouraging communication on charters, etc. Not just small talk, but seriously discussing how they can be better. I hope it’s true becuase that’s what makes a team gel-when you’re tight off the ice as well as on the ice. Let’s see if they can string a few together here. If we don’t win at least 3 of 4 against the ‘Yotes this month, I’ll be disappointed. You know, I’m kind of sad that the old days are gone-the days when I was satisfied with a decent effort and not getting blown out. Now, I expect the Sharks to win every game and find myself looking for answers every time they lose. I guess it’s part of the cycle. Let’s hope a Stanley Cup comes before the next downswing!
