WINDSOR, Ont. – The family of a budding hockey star who died mysteriously last winter near Windsor, Ont., says he died of an underlying heart condition.
Mickey Renaud, captain of the Ontario Hockey League Windsor Spitfires, died in February at his home in nearby Tecumseh. In a statement, his family says an autopsy determined that the 19-year-old player died of a condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
The family says toxicological tests showed no evidence of drugs and that today’s statement would the only public comment it would issue.
The Spitfires postponed two games after Renaud’s death and said they would retire Renaud’s number 19 before the start of the coming season.
Renaud had been drafted by the NHL’s Calgary Flames at the time of his death.

Tragic, just Tragic
My prayers go out to all who knew him, but especially to his parents. I’ve got a daughter and 2 boys, I don’t know how I could manage life if something this tragic would happen. It’s not suppose to work like that. The circle was broken way to soon. No parent should have to go through the loss of a child. Very sad.
