Earnin' that respect...
So I went to Game 4 against Detroit, which was a killer game, but I was flipping out because the game was at 6 pm. I left the apartment at about 4 heading to Anaheim, and it took me like 2 hours and 45 minutes. I just hit the sickest rush hour traffic of all time, and I was just itching to get to the game. The first period started and I was still a half hour away, so I started listening on the radio. It was really frustrating.

Back in familiar territory
OK, so hang on a second here…“Dr.! Life Support, please! Can you bring me a cappuccino and a cigar, because we’re getting to that point, where things are beginning to look quite grim…”
I’m kidding.
But this is it – the first elimination game Detroit has faced this postseason. I almost forgot what the feeling was like. I didn’t forget how much I dislike it though, and how much I had hoped we wouldn’t have to suffer through one at all. But this is the Wild West. The best, most dangerous and difficult hockey league on the planet, and to think you wouldn’t have to face an elimination game is foolish. This was coming, one way or another, and now we’re going to see how the boys respond.

Looking for respect
It all begins tonight for my Ducks. Game 1 vs. Detroit! My mind is everywhere…there is so much going on it’s going to be really, really good. I mean, you have the history between these teams in the playoffs. Years ago, it was Detroit getting a shot at the “lowly” Ducks. Now we’re looking forward to be seen as a force to be reckoned with.

A Wings fan in Saskatoon
So I’ve been spending the past few days at home, in Saskatoon Saskatchewan, and things couldn’t be better. I’ve had time to spend with my dad, my friends and family, and just enough time to catch the Wings make it to the Conference Final since 2002. And to top it off, it gets underway tonight!

Looking back before moving forward
I wasn’t going anywhere for Ducks-Canucks Game 5, so I watched it at home with friends. I was yelling at the TV screen the whole time. It was a grea time – in fact, I almost missed the goal in overtime because I had to go get some beer.. I just barely snuck back in after the third intermission. It was a good game. It was exactly how I thought it would be, a battle of the goaltenders. You could say the end was kinda disappointing, how Luongo went down with that goal, but I’ll take it because that’s the only way we would’ve got one past him. It was nerve-wracking. Our chances were coming and going. Giguere stuck in there and played really well. It was a bit of a bummer, I felt bad the way the goal was scored, but that’s the only way it would’ve gone in. I believe it was good non-call by the referee, but our goal at the end in the 2OT, it was sneaky. I can’t tell if it was redirected or not, but Luongo was distracted, which was good.

Why they play, why we watch
This is why they play the game.
I love hockey, but man, there are times I can’t stand it. The other night, I’m watching the game (Game5), and it’s hard to breathe, but I’m sitting down watching and hoping for the best. The girls know to keep the door to my lounge shut, and I’m sitting there watching Hasek after he starts doing the Jekyll and Hyde thing: first he’s a stone wall, and then all of a sudden a puck bounces over his head, slow enough that I could read the logo on it. San Jose Sharks it said, and on the other side, Stanley Cup playoffs.

Atmosphere? Yeah, we got that.
Before even reaching the stadium, you could feel like excitement building. Dozens of teal-clad fans headed towards the “Shark Tank” from every direction, proudly displaying hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of NHL merchandise. The pre-playoff games were just ending, and despite the smooth operations at the front end, the sheer amount of people there made it a good fifteen minutes before we even got into the stadium. Upon receiving a Sharks territory towelette on entry, I promptly began swinging it around – no time like thte present to get those energy levels up!

Growing up with the Ducks
I’ve always been a fan, growing up in OC as I did, of the Anaheim teams. I think I’ve been reading the sports page from the first day I could read. Got hooked on the Angels, and then the Ducks when they came out after watching the Disney movie the Mighty Ducks. From day one, I stuck with them, ever since they came into the league, and I’ve been going to the games all life. I became a fan quickly, but it really solidified when I was 10 years old, and heading going to San Jose to watch the Ducks play. I ended up being on the same flight as the Ducks. I didn’t know they were on the flight at first and when I found out, I mean, I was 10, so I was pretty excited. Then in the game that night, they won 1-0, and I stood on my seat and started cheering, right in San Jose, when they scored their goal. I’m sure the San Jose fans weren’t too happy about it. Oh, and I actually met the players on that flight, and get this: I still have a barf bag autographed by Paul Kariya, Teemu Selanne and Fredrik Olausson!

Desperation boys
The countdown has started for Game 5 and I’m desparate. I’m done with the stats, the professionalism, the eloquent ways of my former soliloquies as such. I’m just desperate.
