NHL Draft: Let's make a deal

OK hockey fans, sleep on that.

What an absolutely ridiculous night here at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa. At final count there were 14 trades and some pretty big names shifted around as well as a lot of draft picks. It’s midnight here and I just finished three stories, if you think I’m counting how many draft picks were dealt around tonight you’re nuts.

However, let’s go over those NHL players that got moved around.

Olli Jokinen is now going to get a fresh start in Phoenix and he’ll get a chance to play with the up and coming Coyotes under the guidance of ‘The Great One.’ Gretzky told me tonight he’s excited to have Jokinen in the fold because he’s the veteran power forward they wanted to take some of the pressure off the young guys like Kyle Turris and Martin Hanzal – notice he didn’t say Peter Mueller – and give Shane Doan some help in the leadership department. Jokinen was the captain for the Panthers and Doan has long been the captain of the Coyotes.

In exchange the Panthers got two able-bodied defensemen in Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton. Panthers GM Jacques Martin told me he thinks Ballard is going to be the team’s No. 2 defenseman behind Jay Bouwmeester and Boynton will play on the second pairing. You can bet Tomas Vokoun is happy tonight because bringing those two into the mix should mean he faces less shots next year.

Calgary basically swapped Alex Tanguay, who needed a change of scenery, for Michael Cammalleri as well as the 17th pick in the draft for the 25th pick in the draft. The Flames got Cammalleri from L.A. in exchange for that 17th pick. They Flames, though, got back into the first round by trading Tanguay to Montreal for the 25th pick. What the Flames lose in Tanguay they make up for in Cammalleri, who just turned 26 on June 8. Tanguay, by the way, 28 and turns 29 in late November so the Flames got a little younger, too.

In one of the more underrated moves of the night the Columbus Blue Jackets picked up R.J. Umberger from Philadelphia in exchange for the 19th pick and the 67th pick. Philly used No. 19 to select defenseman Luca Sbisa.

I can’t wait to get in touch with Umberger to talk about this move because he’s an Ohio State product and we all know where that school is located. Hello Columbus. I’m sure R.J. isn’t going to mind going back to his roots.

The only other NHL player that got moved tonight was Steve Eminger from the Capitals to the Flyers in exchange for the 27 th pick. The Caps also gave Philly pick No. 84. The Flyers used No. 27 to select John Carlson, a U.S. born defenseman.

Day Two begins in less than 10 hours. Six rounds in a flash is how it’s going to go. Keep reading NHL.com for our extensive and exclusive coverage.
