NHL decline is an outrage
Did you read the column of Dan Wetzel on Yahoo.com entitled “Expanding Foolishness”. I live in Vegas and sure would like a team in my city although i’m a Pens fan and enjoy there success. Mr Wetzel brings some interesting points of the decline of the audience during the Series, the attendance of Nashville and the lockout factor. I agree that the lockout may have hurt a little all the franchise, being out for a year is not easy for any team but there is a good fan base in every team that it should’nt matter. Not worth talking about. The point I somewhat agree with Mr. Wetzel is that the audience for the Stanley cup finals is in decline. Well, I believe it’s true but not because of the lockout. The Stanley cup finals “in the US” has been broadcasted on 2 different channel. Game 1 and 2 was on Versus then got switch to NBC. Versus is a Cable channel, which means you have to pay to get it. NBC is on any TV. I do have both channel because I have upgraded to cable TV and even paid to get “NHL full access” to every game. But for the people who don’t have it. Picture this or maybe you are one of them. How would be your motivation to follow the stanley cup finals after missing game 1 and 2 because you don’t have that channel? I honestly would’nt care after 2 games. Then they broadcast it on national TV and expect the all out audience. They are dreaming, that’s why the numbers suggest the decline. The same would apply to any other sports. That’s why you can watch Basketball, Baseball and football finals on national TV. Imagine that you have to watch the Superbowl on Pay-per-View? You would see a dratic deline, right? The Stanley cup finals should be available to every hockey fans to enjoy. I hope Mr. Bettman realize what’s going on and make changes on TV contracts, I would even fire the person responsible to this mess. Fran99nv
