About the pics.
Thanks for your comment. That rink in West Edmonton Mall is great, and the dynasty Oilers used to practice there. That’s cool.

Thanks.
You’re fun to coach, ‘cause you appreciate it so much. You’re doing fine to me, and I understand not wanting to look silly, but unless you fall down on your face, you can’t look silly. Nobody is going to look down on you for walking or running slow, especially when you’re just learning how to do this. If you take twice as long and still finish it, you’ve accomplished the same as everyone else. Nobody will have travelled farther than you that day, so you can still be proud of yourself. You can work on speed and endurance from then on. I like your attitude, about signing up for more of them. That’s the way to learn. You’ll get better at it and more confident as you go along. And if you have a bad day or week, just tell me about it and I’ll help you through it.
I had my Wednesday Running Club yesterday, and I ran on my own, since I was faster and longer than the other runners there – I ran about 1 hour, 10 minutes (I think about 12 or 13 km). I’m scared for when the faster guys are there, because then I’LL look silly (those guys run a 10 km run about 20 minutes faster than I do, and that’s an eternity). Funny, but I seriously worry about looking bad, too.

See you there...
I’ll be the one looking dazed and confused and waving all over the place.

You're sooo right...
and there are way more Canadians in Raleigh than most would think. Yeah, I try every year to at least go to the Pens games at the RBC. Schedule didn’t work out so well last year…but I try to make a few games, whoever’s playing. I hope this year works out.

Not a cake walk.
Half-marathons are still hard, just not excruciating for me. I can have a better strategy for a half-marathon, because I know I won’t hit the wall before it’s done. Don’t get discouraged. Long-distance running is something you work yourself into over time, and it almost takes as much mental training as physical. You slowly learn how to get a technique to do the distance, then you start mentally getting tougher as you train your body to do more than it’s used to (and more than it wants to). I’ve always been able to do long-distance runs, so when someone who doesn’t have the same gift does it, I feel more admiration. Please, still do the 5 km event in a couple of weeks, because you DON’T have to run the whole thing, and it’s for a great cause. Hey, don’t think for a second Captain Rod won’t be impressed by you overcoming and finishing 5 km whether it’s walking or running. I know I’ll be cheering you on and will consider you a champ for trying it. Regardless of how you feel about it, I’m very proud of you for doing this. That won’t change.
