A worldview, on the eve of Game 4
Well, phew!
“We needed that one !”
Thats what thousands, nay, millions ‘o Senators fans are saying after Ottawas’ 5-3 victory Saturday night. Millions, because regardless of your views on the federal government, the Sens are definitely carrying the hockey mantle for all of Canada right now. I asked my friend Scott, who lives down in amorphous Orange County just north of Anaheim, what his take on the Canadian federal government was:

End of the Line
A very interesting thing is going on – as much to do with friendship as anything. Kim Coates has become a bit of a Sabres fan and myself a bit of a Detroit fan, and it’s been kinda nice. I’ve really enjoying this postseason, and my wife has become a monstrous Wings fan. They played so well. We were able, Kim and myself, to watch the Ducks eliminate the Wings on Tuesday, and while it was tough to watch, I give all credit to the Wings for battling as they did, right up to the end of the game.
But on to the Sabres, the reason we’re all here. Here are my thoughts on my final blog…

So it all comes down to this...
So it’s Game 5, and I’m in transit. But I’ve got everything figured out – I’m going to catch the first 15 minutes at home, hop in a cab and catch the next two periods at JFK. This is a big thing today, huge; the fat lady is having another sandwich in the parking lot, and who knows? She might just wait a couple more days before she sings her final refrain. I just can’t say no to any of this stuff, any scenario anymore – anything can happen, and it’s all minute-by-minute. Psychologically, what can happen today is just huge! It always is in this sort of scenario, because if (and I’m saying IF, hockey gods) Buffalo wins its home game, you’re going to see a very nervous Ottawa team and fanbase come Monday night. Most of all I’d love to see the Sabres win and leave their fans, if this is the last time they’ll see them this season, with a good memory of the team. But we’re not getting ahead of ourselves here. The game is all that matters. The funny thing is, each team has played better in the other’s arena. With a 3-1 series, the Sabres, trying to re-coup a sense of who they are this year, are going to have a lot riding against them in this Game 5. As well as Ottawa has been playing on the road and as well as the Senators have been playing at HSBC, I can’t see further ahead than the drop of the puck. I just can’t. The best part though? It’s an afternoon game, on a Saturday, so nobody has to worry about going to work tomorrow – you know they put the screen up in the parking lot at HSBC, and I have a feeling they’re going to break that 10,000 mark record.

Believe, first of all. Then pray.
Its so hard to describe my emotions at this point, but I’m going to take a stab at it. IF what happens tonight is what none of us want to happen (those of you here as Sabres fans anyway), it’s going to be one of those series where you’re going to look back and wonder “what happened here?” It’s just a matter of too many crossbars, posts, and bad breaks, but really you can’t take away anything from the Senators. And this is the other side of me trying to be as fair as possible – I can’t take anything away from the Senators. They’re a hell of a team, and this has been a long time coming. How many times have the Senators been eliminated by the Sabres in the past couple years? Last year obviously, and in ’99 as well, actually that year I believe they knocked out both the Maple Leafs and the Senators. Judging from the people on the blogs, on my page and Boreanaz’s site as well, everyone up in Ottawa is loving that team, and they deserve it. Is it going to happen in four games? God I hope not.

Over? Did you say over?
So first of all, I’m not nervous. I’m actually extremely confidant that this series will go seven games and Buffalo will win it. I have a lot of faith in this team. However saying that, I watched Game 2 and it was very frustrating. Buffalo looked worn out. Ottawa is a good club, we knew from the get-go that they’d be problematic. Looking down the road, losing two games at home is rough but from here you take it one game at a time and fight your way back. Who is to say we can’t go into Ottawa and take two wins on their home ice? I’ve seen it all before, and it’ll happen for the Sabres, I know it will. Ruff will light a fire under them. They need to put on those old-time jerseys and eat some extra servings of spaghetti parm.
